Class Information

6th grade:

This course is an introduction to the seventh grade Design and Modeling and the eighth grade Flight and Space course.  Students utilize both the design process and the scientific method as they complete collaborative projects.  We learn about engineering to solve real world problems, technical sketching, and end with components of flight and astronaut life.

7th grade:

Design and Modeling (DM) provides students opportunities to apply the design process to creatively solve problems. Students are introduced to the unit problem in the first activity and are asked to make connections to the problem throughout the lessons in the unit. Students learn and utilize methods for communicating design ideas through sketches, solid models, and mathematical models. Students will understand how models can be simulated to represent an authentic situation and generate data for further analysis and observations. Students work in teams to identify design requirements, research the topic, and engage stakeholders. Teams design a toy or game for a child with cerebral palsy, fabricate and test it, and make necessary modifications to optimize the design solution.

8th grade:

The exciting world of aerospace comes alive through the Flight and Space (FS) unit. The first quarter is spent learning about the history of aviation and the science of flight. Students become engineers as they design, prototype, and test models to learn about flying.  Second quarter, students learn what it takes to travel and live in space. Throughout the course they solve real-world aviation and space challenges and will end by planning a mission to Mars.

Biography

After teaching middle school mathematics for 18 years I am excited to be teaching sixth, seventh, and eighth grade Exploratory classes utilizing Project Lead the Way (PLTW).

I enjoy traveling, music, food, and spending time with my family.
