Arrival: Our school day begins at 8:25 a.m. Your child will have outdoor supervised playtime, weather permitting, from 8:00 to 8:20 a.m. Attendance is entered at 8:25. After that time, your child is considered tardy, and must report to the office to get a tardy slip.
Lunch: Your child goes to lunch from 11:00 a.m. -11:30 a.m. He/she may buy lunch by the day, week, or month. Please send the lunch or milk money IN AN ENVELOPE WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME, GRADE, AND TEACHER’S NAME ON IT.
Reading and Spelling: Reading and Spelling tests are given at the end of each week on Fridays, unless otherwise noted due to holiday schedules. Changes in schedules will be passed along to you in advance. All new spelling words will go home on Monday and will also be placed in my weekly newsletter, which will come home on Friday. Please practice these words with your child every night, in addition to any other homework that might be assigned.
Please read with your child EVERY night, even if I don’t assign something specific.
Math: Our math series’ goals is to make children think using everyday situations. Many of the math papers are worked on together as a class or in groups. Because of this, your child may not always bring home math papers every day. On occasion, I will send home Math homework. If your child needs extra help on a specific skill, I may send your child additional practice papers for you to work on at home.
Please work on Math with your child. We will be working on counting, writing and recognizing the numbers 0-120, counting forward, counting backward, basic addition and subtraction, skip counting, money recognition, and telling time. We also use the computer to reinforce math concepts. Or biggest goal is for your child to know how to add and subtract basic facts.
Report Cards: Your child will receive letter grades on the report card this year in Reading, Math and Spelling. Conduct grades are given in special areas of P.E., Music and for behavior.
Specials: Your child will have P.E. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please make sure to send in an extra pair of gym shoes for your child to wear on P.E. days. These shoes will be kept at school. Music is on Mondays and Wednesdays, Art is on Mondays, and Computers on Fridays. In addition, we will visit the library weekly. Students are encouraged to choose 2 books that are on their level. Please read these books with your child. Books must be returned in order to check out more books.
Communication: The purple folders provided by the school are to be used for parent/teacher communication. I check folders every morning for things that need to be turned in to me or the office. Please check your child’s folder every day for assignments or important information. Checks/money are to be placed in an envelope, labeled with your child’s name, and purpose. Please put this in the “Return to School” side of the purple folder. I will collect money and turn it in to the correct place. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone, note, or email. I am requesting that all parents send a test email to leea@msd19.org. Please include your name and your child’s name. I will send a response once I receive it.
Discipline: Our school-wide behavior motto is the ABCs of Wingate Elementary. This stands for Act Responsibly, Be Respectful, and Chooses Wisely. Positive behaviors are promoted in the school and classroom, and are rewarded regularly school-wide. We also have monthly character words that are used to promote good character and positive behavior. I will handle most discipline problems on an individual basis as they occur. If more serious issues arise, either the Principal or I will contact parents by phone or email.
Birthdays: Please do not feel that you have to supply a treat for your child’s birthday. If you want to send a treat, please send a small treat bag with items like pencils, erasers, or small toys to be sent home. Due to many food allergies, food is not to be sent in. It is against school policy to send invitations for birthday parties to school unless you are planning to invite the whole class. It is acceptable for boys to invite all boys and girls to invite all girls.
Dismissal: Dismissal is at 3:25 p.m. Our K-1 students who are picked up will be dismissed from door #1 (near the office).
I hope this information is helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. I am looking forward to a great school year!
Thank you,
Ann Lee
