A syllabus provides important information about what is expected in a course and from the students taking the course. It details the course requirements, your assignments and their deadlines, participation and attendance expectations, and how your grade is calculated.
Key elements of a syllabus:
Define the instructor’s role and responsibility to learners.
Explain the roles and responsibilities of the learners.
Provide clear learning objectives/outcomes.
Establish course expectations and plans for evaluation, assessment, and feedback.
Describe course activities and familiarize learners with how the course functions.
Provide information on how, when, and where course communications and interactions with the instructor and between learners will take place.
All courses are required to upload the syllabus to Blackboard. It can be found in the individual course pages, usually under Start Here/Resources. Your lecture instructors may also choose to distribute a paper copy.
When are the exams and major assignments due? Are assignments due in class or electronically by a certain time? What is the late policy? Be sure to check all the deadlines for all your courses to see whether you are committing yourself to four midterm essays in the same week or submission frequency and deadlines for online courses conflict with your work schedule. Your decision to take the course implies that you have read and understood the syllabus and that you will accept and adhere to the requirements and the grading policies spelled out there.
