In the fall of 2022, 6th through 8th grade students in the Maine Environmental Science Academy (MESA) set out on an endeavor to identify the flora and fauna of their local watersheds. In keeping with the philosophy of place-based education, the following three watersheds transformed into their classroom. This work reflects about 6 months of weekly visits, crawling through mud, snow and streams to create an inventory of the rich diversity found in our local watersheds. This work is a reflection of the support and teaching of our community partnership with the Greater Lovell Land Trust, specifically, Leigh Macmillen Hayes, Dawn Wood and Jessie Lozanski. Together, students have created a product that demonstrates collaboration, problem solving and leadership, which are the foundations of the MESA program. This is not to be considered a comprehensive catalog, but instead one will find selections of each species.
