Food deserts are places where the economy and the landscape around them make it harder for people to access healthy and nutritious food. In many cases sadly people don't even know that they are in a food desert. Some effects of living in a food desert are obesity, diabetes, or even heart disease.
You can tell you are in a food desert by checking if you have a healthy supermarket or grocery store within 5 miles of you place of residence, you live a rural or urban area, and or live in a low income area. A lot of the times food deserts are also in places that don't have towns you might be living in the middle of nowhere, but in that case you are most likely living in food desert. You might have food nearby, but that food isn't always healthy which is a sign of a food desert or a food swamp.
If you are in a food desert and are having food issues you can locate your nearest food pantry, you can make or find gardens which will help you get healthy and sustaining food, and you can ask friends and or family to lend you food that they might not want so you can have healthy food.
