This routine engages students in comparing. How are the items in the boxes similar or different? They need to select one item they would eliminate and explain their reasoning. I think it is fun to ask them to find a reason to eliminate each of the 4 items.

Steve has a great video where he talks about how Splat works and explains each of the levels. It is awesome! He has eight different levels of complexity all are download for free!

This is the link for his Fraction Splat!

This website has downloadable mysteries. He has two that are for younger K-2 age. Most are 3-5th grade level because he talks about multiples, prime numbers, etc.

This routine helps students see the many ways that a number can be decomposed. They use the visual to create multiple equations. It can be used to move students from addition equations toward multiplication.

This routine involves fractions and area. It encourages students to find multiple ways of thinking and solving challenges using color coding.
