The topic of having an artificial turf field on campus is not a new topic of discussion at MSAD #51. The topic first came up during an Athletic Advisory Board meeting in 2007.
The discussion resurfaced again in 2012 when Board of Directors voted to approve the proposal of the Athletic Advisory Board Committee to create a Greely Turf Field Committee to explore and investigate private funding for turf fields.
In 2015 a Community Capital Campaign was created. The goal - to install a state-of-the-art synthetic turf surface on the varsity playing field at Greely High School. The turf field would be designed with the community in mind, offering expanded recreational opportunities for children throughout the school district and community as a whole.
At the February 2015 Board meeting the Board of Directors unanimously agreed that they would like the turf field to be part of the Strategic Plan.
Over the years since then the campaign to fundraise for the turf lost traction until the proposal of the new school arose. Though the turf field did remain on the District's long range major capital plan.
In March 2022 David Shapiro, Athletic Director, gave a turf field presentation to the Board of Directors.
In March 2024 the Board of Directors held a workshop regarding the new school concept design & scope of project. The board was once again presented with the turf field proposal to consider as part of the project.
In June 2024 voters approved the school and campus plan which included the construction of a new school, construction of a new maintenance building, installation of a turf field as well as an addition to the Mabel I. Wilson school.
