Here is an overview of what we be learning in each subject area.
Reading
We will have a Reading Workshop where we will be reading "Just Right Books," which are determined based upon student comprehension, retelling, fluency, and accuracy. The workshop includes a mini-lesson, followed by rotations that include: independent reading, pair share, word work/grammar practice, and teacher time (guided reading).
Core Units of Instruction:

Math
Our Math Units will focus on:
- Reviewing of 2nd Grade Math Skills
- Geometry
- Multiplication & Division
- Fractions
We will use Everyday Math version 4. We will be having a Math Workshop which include of a math message/warm-up, mini lesson, followed by rotations that include: journal work, games, practice pages, etc. Students will also have Homelinks, which will be assigned most nights and corrected by students the following day.
Spelling/Grammar
We will be having Word/Grammar Study, which will focus on specific spelling strategies such as spelling patterns, high frequency words, word structures, and letter/sound relationships. Students will have weekly spelling words that they will practice in school and at home. Each Friday students will have a spelling check-in.
As part of our Word/Grammar Study students will work towards earning their COPS badge. A COPS badge is earned once a student demonstrates that he or she can consistently include Capitalization, Organization (paragraphs and well structured sentences), Punctuation, and Spelling (based upon where they are in their spelling instruction) in his or her daily work. We will be learning about the ingredients of a complete sentence and the different parts of speech.
Writing
Core Units of Instruction:
- Crafting True Stores: Personal Narratives
- The Art of Information Writing
- Persuasive Opinion Writing
- Adapting Fairy Tales
We will have a Writing Workshop which will include a mini-lesson, followed by independent work, pair shares and teacher guided groups. Students will create a collection of written pieces in their writing journal and then select specific pieces to take to publication. Students will learn about the revising and editing process as they take their written work through the publication process.
Students will also be learning and practicing cursive.
Social Studies
Over the course of the year students will be learning about the state of Maine. Student will learn about Maine history and timelines, Maine Native Americans, and other important information about Maine.
Science
We will be using Mystery Science, which incorporates hands-on scientific exploration and discussion.
