Mrs. Roy

My name is Lisa Roy and I am a Reading Recovery teacher at Benton Elementary School.  I am also a Certified Literacy Interventionist. As a veteran teacher, being able to work with young children continues to bring a ray of sunshine into my every day.

As an interventionist, I work with students in grades 1 and 2.  I work with these students either in one-on-one sessions or in small groups. I’ve had extensive training in the graduate level year-long Literacy Lessons course and also in the graduate level year-long Comprehensive Intervention Model course which was taught by Whendy Smith through the University of Maine at Orono.

I first started my educational journey by becoming a Certified Montessori Teacher with the Northeast Montessori Society at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts. I’ve taught in a total of six Montessori schools in the states of Louisiana, Massachusetts and Maine with children ages three to six years old. I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Maine at Farmington in Elementary Education. I began teaching at Benton Elementary School in 1999. I worked in grades four and five for 10 years. During the summer of 2008 I was privileged to write professionally for Dr. Janet Allen (International Literacy Consultant) in Sanibel Island, Florida for her professional teaching series, Plugged-In to Non-Fiction Grades 4 & 5. This is a Recorded Audio Book program that is used in our district. I received my Masters degree from Thomas College in 2009. I was hired as a Literacy Coach for Benton Elementary and Fairfield Primary Schools and after an intense year-long graduate level coaching training taught by Marcia Nye Boody. I received my K-6 Coaching Certification from the University of Maine in 2010. At the start of the 2011-2012 school year, I became an adjunct faculty member of University of Maine, Orono. I co-taught with Sandra Mitchell, the graduate level course, ERL 590 Effective Literacy Practices in the Maine Partnerships in Comprehensive Literacy K-6. This course is offered to elementary teachers, administrators, and educational technicians in our district. At the end of the 2012 school year, I successfully completed the UMO requirements to become a Comprehensive Literacy Intervention Specialist. I have also completed my C.A.S (Certificate of Advanced Study) as a Literacy Specialist from The University of Maine at Orono.

I have been a Student Council Advisor at Benton Elementary School for students in grades four to six for the past 20 years.

I strive to have an impact in the lives of the students whom I teach. I am also passionate about collaborating with the teachers that I work with to continue to learn and to impact the children at Benton Elementary School.
