The Science Olympiad is a prestigious competition in which teams from across the region showcase their knowledge in various scientific fields. Liberty’s team placed seventh at the event and will compete in the state competition in April.
The Peak Press interviewed juniors Parker Scutter, and Lilia West, to gather more insight on the team’s dynamic, and the inner workings of the competition.
Scutter told the Peak Press that the challenge the team faced the most while preparing for the Olympiad was, “finding the time to learn difficult, college-level optics while learning other concepts (for school).” Scutter fondly described the club meetings, consisting of students, “...Just studying, and cooperating.” There is also a great sense of support and responsibility within the team, Parker Scutter stated, reminiscing on when he required a 3D printed part for the event, and the rest of the team pulled through to get the piece.
Lilia West also expressed that the event was very teamwork-based. “(We) shared calculators, a protractor…just good spirit of teamwork.” West voiced that the skills she honed the most because of the competition were, “...effective organization and memorization skills, and for the building events, the value of trial and error…(which) is the essence of the build events. You try, try, and try it again until you get it right.” West then expressed her anticipation of the upcoming state competition, saying that although it would be a challenge, the people she’d meet, and the experiences she’d have would make it worthwhile.
Best of luck to our talented Lancers at State next month!
