Liberty Marching Band’s season has come to an end after the excitement of making it to the semifinals. With a theme of “Lost in Space,” they finished their season as number 11 in the state with their highest score being 75.25.
The marching band moved up two spots in their final ranking of 4A bands since last year, moving from 13th place to 11th. Out of all the competitions they attended a total of 4 in Broomfield, Castle Rock, Fountain, and here in Colorado Springs for semi-finals.
“The band played space-related music like the theme from the movie Interstellar. We chose this theme because it gave us lots of creative ideas to incorporate…” said band director Mira Hickey.
For example, the band had a sun in the middle of the performance, planets orbiting around the field, people running with meteors, and the color guard in astronaut-themed suits.
There are always challenges when it comes to competitions. “We ran into some weather issues towards the beginning of our season and that caused some delays in the learning of our drill. But once that cleared up, it was smooth sailing,” said Corlibe Aylward, the second Band director.
Alex Rodgers, the flute section leader and woodwind captain said, “I would like to improve the overall collaboration between band members, which I think can be accomplished best by section leaders organizing practices that mix sections, such as having the baritone and clarinet sections meet together.”
After this season the band is looking to expand, Aylward said, "We are looking to continue growing the band, focusing on tone quality/musicality, and striving for perfection and along the way finding excellence!”
Hickey added, “We had about 80 members this year, but it would be great to have closer to 100 for next season.”
