ISBE Policy

The Accelerated Placement Act expands services to ALL students, not only those identified as gifted and talented by local policy, who demonstrate high ability and who may benefit from accelerated placement. It requires the development of local policy to identify such students through a fair and equitable decision making and multiple measure assessment process.

Acceleration is designed to provide opportunities for early entrance into kindergarten and first grade, opportunities for accelerating a student in a single subject area, and opportunities for “whole grade” acceleration (sometimes referred to as “grade skipping”). To determine if your child is a potential candidate for acceleration, please take time to watch the video and review the links below. Acceleration is designed to meet the needs of students with a higher than average cognitive ability. Mahomet-Seymour recognizes that students with an IQ two standard deviations above the norm may have very different needs than other students, and acceleration is one way we can support these students. The district will continue to support and meet the needs of high average and high performing students in the classroom through differentiation.

To make a request for acceleration, please review the "Parent & Teacher Guide to Student Acceleration" which outlines the process. At the end of the document, you will find the Parent Referral Forms. Requests for Whole Grade or Subject Area Acceleration should be submitted to the building principal no later than March 30^th. Requests for Early Entry into Kindergarten or First Grade should be submitted to Mr. Martin, Middletown Elementary Principal, no later than April 30^th.
