This MYP Language and Literature unit explores the power documentaries have to influence and change the world.
This unit builds upon skills and knowledge acquired throughout Grades 6-8, where we have looked at use of language, structure and organisation, analysis, symbolism, and theme.
Together, we will explore how language can evoke emotion and change through rhetorical and persuasive devices. We will also examine and learn the features of documentaries, as well as the three main stages of the filmmaking process. In I&S, you will learn research strategies to help you find and evaluate sources that will ensure your documentary is authentic and factual.
Using this learning, we will combine the power of language and visuals and bring together the skills and knowledge from both subjects. By using the design cycle, you will think about how to employ effective and persuasive language, images, and filmmaking techniques to present an important issue of your choosing and create a collaborative documentary film about an issue with the intention of inspiring change in your audience. You will also develop digital materials and presentations to promote your message and your finished documentary.
The language of film can move, inspire and motivate us to make small changes that can have big impacts on important global issues.
