Brazil is home to many immigrants and is a very diverse nation. Most Brazilians, however, were originally from one of three groups: The Ameridians, the Europeans and the Africans.
The Ameridian people have lived in Brazil for all of recorded history. They have always been a tough and determined group of people and have been known to live in even the most remote jungles. There are still about 300,000 Ameridians living in Brazil today.
European settlers from Portugal arrived in Brazil in the 1500s. This is where Brazil gets its national language of Portuguese. Brazil was a colony of Portugal until they fought for their independence in 1822.
Sadly, people from Africa were brought to Brazil as slaves to work on the sugar plantations. Today, many people living in Brazil have a mixed background from these three people groups as well as other immigrants who came to Brazil when gold was discovered many years ago.
Despite their different backgrounds, all Brazilians are known to love soccer. The sport brings together all types of people in celebration each season. Many of the world’s most famous soccer players have come from Brazil.
