At MRH, we believe that all students are readers and writers. It is our responsibility as educators to foster their curiosity and wonder for stories of all kinds. Our literacy philosophy allows us to utilize books, story telling, and creative expression to empathize, celebrate, and enrich our experiences as citizens in an ever changing world. We strive to empower all students to challenge their understanding of language, becoming scholars and stewards in a diverse community. Literacy instruction at MRH is authentic and thought-provoking, while ultimately providing a safe space for students to succeed academically, find a sense of belonging, and grow crucial 21st century skills.
MRH PK-6 literacy graduates will be able to use evidence-based reasoning to make complex decisions. Throughout their work with a wide variety of literature, students will listen, view, read, and respond to gain a greater understanding of themselves and others. As they explore and inquire about a broad range of topics, students will use literacy as a tool for constructing, analyzing, and sharing knowledge.
MRH PK-6 literacy graduates will be able to effectively speak, write, and use other forms of expression to inform, influence, advocate, and motivate. They will shape and defend critical opinions while remaining open to new information and opposing viewpoints. After developing knowledge, students will be able to share evidence of their learning confidently and to a variety of audiences.
MRH PK-6 literacy graduates will be able to work collaboratively to process, organize, and evaluate ideas. They will be excited to work with others of different backgrounds, beliefs, skills, and strengths. Students will understand that the success of a community depends on collaboration and care from all members.
MRH PK-6 literacy graduates will be able to actively understand and appreciate the unique experiences and perspectives of others. They will be able to utilize books as mirrors and windows into diverse cultures. As they navigate the world both inside and outside of the classroom, students will demonstrate empathy and inclusivity for others.
