A bit of history...
In 1921, NASSAP officially established the National Honor Society. As outlined in the constitution that guides all chapters, its purpose is to "create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools." This purpose translated into the criteria used for membership selection at Manchester High School's local chapter which honors its first superintendent of schools, Fred Ayer Verplanck.
"If a tree falls in the forest but no person is around, does it make any sound? If a person commits an act of evil but no person sees them, is it morally wrong? This is a test of character in a person: the ability to stay true to one's morals and ethics, even if there is no way for anyone to find out about it.
The National Honor Society can not create character in a person but it can help find the character that a person already has and help it reach the surface. Our character defines us; we must pay attention to our actions. Buddha remarked that you should 'Watch your habits, for they become character [and] watch your character for it becomes your destiny.' The National Honor Society can lead a person towards a better destiny, a better future, if they make the choice to promote a beneficial character."- Michael Amato, 2011-12 Secretary, NHS Induction
