In the STEMD Academy, we’re excited to help students explore careers in a wide range of STEM fields and begin to develop the hands-on and thinking skills you will need to be successful. Here are just some of the things you can expect and be a part of as a member of STEMD:
Explorations in STEM: Not quite sure what STEM is all about, or what you might be interested in pursuing for a career? In this class, you will have the opportunity to hear from speakers from a wide range of careers, and learn some basic skills for using tools and technology.
Core Classes: You may be in STEMD sections of core classes (Science, Math, or English) that will give you a chance to explore these topics through STEM related resources, assignments, and readings.
UCONN Engineering Ambassadors: Students in the UCONN School of Engineering visit the school 2-3 times each year and expose students to the engineering fields and engineering design thinking.
Electives: We currently offer a wide range of electives including Computer Programming, Web Design, Mobile App Design, Game Design, Electronics, Architecture, Aviation, Tools & Materials, Construction Tech, Autos, CADD, Robotics, Engineering and Design, and Scientific Principles in Technology. We have also added AP Computer Science Principles this year. STEMD students have priority enrolling in these classes.
Field Trips: Look for opportunities to visit Pratt & Whitney, UCONN School of Engineering Senior Design Day, CT Pro Rodeo Construction Career Day, the UCONN Women in Engineering Conference, and more.
Events and Clubs: Join our eSports or Robotics clubs and compete against schools across the state and nation. Students can also be a part of planning and running our annual Hour of Code event in December.
Developing Opportunities: We are in the process of developing a manufacturing apprenticeship program that would train seniors on basic manufacturing techniques and equipment, and may lead to certifications and job placements post-high school.
