What's New in Fifth Grade

Welcome to Grade 5, your child's last school year at Waddell School! We have planned a challenging and enjoyable 2017-2018 school year!

In Reading, we focus on "just right books". Our students will read a variety of fiction and non-fiction works to improve reading fluency and comprehension. Lessons will focus on key ideas and details, craft and structure, and the integration of knowledge and ideas.

In Math Workshop, students will utilize the Mathematical Practices to enhance their math skills. Lessons will focus on operations and algebraic thinking, numbers and operations in base ten, numbers and operations in fractions, measurement and data, and geometry.

In Writing, we will use the Lucy Calkin's Units of Writing. Students will learn to develop narrative and persuasive essays and research based reports. They take part in lessons to enhance their vocabulary, grammar, and editing and revising skills.

In Social Studies, our units include a Civics Unit which focuses on our state government and how officials are elected. The culminating activity results in the election of a candidate for Connecticut Kid Governor. We also take part in an American Revolution Unit highlighting the struggles towards independence.

In Science, we are lucky to have Samantha DeSantis, the Grade 3-5 STEM teacher, to work with our students! They will learn about the sun, earth, and moon and the five senses incorporating engineering skills.

This year each student will have their own Chromebook to use during the school day to allow for more technology integration in all subject areas.
