Daily 5

During Read to Self, students read from their book bin of good-fit books. Students are expected to stay in one place and read quietly the whole time.

Children may use any of the 3 ways to read a book:

Read the pictures

Read the words

Retell the story


During work on writing, students are able to work on pieces of writing that are already in progress in their writing folder. They may also choose to write in their writing journal during this time. Students are expected to write at their desk and writing quietly the whole time.

During Read to Someone, students read books with a partner. Students may take turns reading aloud to their partner in a whisper voice. Partners help practice reading strategies and check for understanding while reading. Students are expected to stay in one place and read to their partners in a whisper voice the whole time.

During Word Work, students use various materials to practice spelling words or sight words on the word wall. Word Work choices include stamps, shell spell, magnetic letters, stencils, sand spell..etc.. Students are expected to get materials out, practice quietly the whole time, and put materials back in our Word Work center.

During Listen to Reading, students listen to books on CD or listen to stories on the computer. Students are expected to choose a quite spot, listen the whole time and return materials when finished.
