Our circle time rug is where we begin our day with our morning meeting, songs, academic practice and story time. We practice sitting on our shape as well as enjoy moving around the room to engage with instruction and activities.
The toy area provides children with the opportunity to create, work together and make their ideas reality. They work with shapes, measuring, problem solving and communication with others. This center includes building materials, cars, people and animals.
The sensory center provides children with the opportunity to explore materials in a variety of textures such as sand, beans, rice and pasta. There are tools to engage in imaginative play while they are exploring various concepts within these bins. We use this area for our light table as well.
The math & science center provides children with the opportunity to work with and explore various organic materials and science equipment such as magnets, shells, magnifying glasses and scales. They can practice using these items on their own and develop mathematical and scientific thinking skills as well as working on fine motor skills.
The house center provides children with the opportunity to explore social roles and scenarios they encounter in their everyday life. They may be a parent cooking for a baby or dress up like a firefighter. This center changea to include different themes during the year.
The writing area provides children with the opportunity to practice early writing skills. Children will be given a variety of materials such as envelopes, mini books and even letters with different textures to trace with a writing utensil or their finger to interact with early literacy in their preferred way. Students will also be able to play with puzzles in this area if they choose.
The book center provides children with the opportunity to explore and enjoy books in a comfortable environment. Children can practice early read skills, read with themselves or even with other children. This is important to learning early decoding skills and fostering an early love for literacy.
The quiet area is an area for children to sit in a quiet area and recharge their batteries. This is a secluded place to explore sensory materials, regulate emotions and get our mind and body ready to learn if they need it.
The art area provides children with the opportunity to explore materials and develop motor, cognitive and language skills through art and creative expression. This is a multisensory way to play, where students choose materials and create ideas through colors, textures, clay, glue and many more avenues. Children are encouraged to get messy and explore!
The restroom we use is shared with other students in the school! We have added a changing table to help with students in their stage of using the restroom. We know working in early childhood students not only learn and grow at their own pace but potty train as well. Our preschool team works hard with lots of positive support, reinforcement as well as confidence in the restroom. We also know that privacy is important so students will use stalls when going or trying on the potty as well as if they are being having a diaper/pull up change. We have the older students wait if they need to use the restroom as privacy is important.
Our morning students use the gated area small playground to work on the gross motor and sharing skills. We use outside toys such as cars, balls, tricycles and much more!
Our afternoon students start on the small playground and build their confidence up to the big kid playground. We however do not go past the ropes and not on the tall side.
We have Library on Thursdays. Mrs. Heuther always picks out a great story that has to do with our unit study. Then students are able to pick out a vairety of books based on what we are learning about. Students should bring their books back on Thursday so you may check out a new one.
