About Us
The Mustang Mentoring Program (MMP) was founded in the spring of 2006 for two primary purposes:
1) To help incoming 9th graders transition to high school. At the beginning of the year it entails getting them used to the school and encouraging them to get involved and connected to the school in some way. As the year progresses, their focus subtly shifts to helping students become happier, healthier and more successful. Two or three mentors are paired with approximately 12-14 9th grade students. Every Monday for the entire school year, the mentors host conversations and activities with their freshmen to help develop positive habits.
2) To help juniors and seniors develop leadership skills. It is an experiential approach in that these mentors are given the responsibility to lead their group each week.
Every year, we do an all-day training to prepare the mentors for the upcoming school year. During the school year, we meet every Monday morning with the mentors, before school to review the lesson of the day and discuss the previous week’s lesson. We also do leadership development retreats, usually an all-day experience, with the mentors. An example is taking them to a camp with two high rope elements and one low rope element for leadership and team building. In September of 2009, one of our local media stations came out to cover our day and the Mustang Mentoring Program’s mission.
Our juniors and seniors who act as mentors for our freshmen use material from Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets, Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, and many others to lead activities and host conversations about what it is that healthy students do. Mentors also meet once a week together to troubleshoot and plan for their next mustang time. MMP is run by a student board with the guidance of two staff members. Mentors go through an intensive selection process and are held to high standards as a model for freshmen.
