Course Description: Through this course, students will analyze how American literature reflects the identities and cultures of the United States. Students will interpret challenging texts from a variety of genres and themes through multicultural perspectives in historical and contemporary American literature. By examining various views and social contexts, students will gain a deeper understanding of language, literature, and the writing process. Students will study a variety of texts, including short stories, novels, poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction, and visual text. This class will be assessed using a variety of methods, including essays, presentations, discussions, and critical thinking activities.

Popular Genres

Course Description: This course will examine popular genres throughout the ages. Students will enjoy reading, writing about, responding to, and discussing short stories and novels — contemporary and classics. Selections will come from the following focus genres: sports literature, crime, and detective collections, fantasy/science-fiction, action/adventure, dystopian literature, and creative nonfiction. This class will be assessed using a variety of methods, including, but not limited to, essays, presentations, journals, and creative critical thinking activities.
