Language therapy focuses on building strong communication skills by improving vocabulary, sentence structure, and understanding of language concepts. Language therapy helps students develop better listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities through engaging, individualized, age-appropriate activities. Goals are to boost a child's confidence and overall success in both classroom learning and everyday conversations.
Language therapy will take place in your child's classroom and/or in my speech room. If we're working in my room, language activities will include specific themes throughout the school year. Here's the breakdown of the general themes we discuss each quarter:
1st Quarter:
-Themes: Fall, Back to School, Football, Apples, Pumpkins
2nd Quarter:
-Themes: Winter, Snow, Holidays, Weather, Friendship
3rd Quarter:
-Themes: Spring, St. Patrick's Day, Earth Day, Sports
4th Quarter:
-Themes: Summer, Earth Day, Flowers, Vacations
Ideas you can do at home to build your child's language skills:
Talk regularly with your child about their day, interests, and feelings to encourage conversation.
Read together daily, asking questions about the story to build vocabulary and comprehension.
Expand on your child’s sentences by adding new words or details to model richer language.
Play word games like rhyming, guessing games, or “I spy” to make learning fun.
Encourage your child to tell stories or explain how to do something step-by-step.
Listen actively and patiently, giving your child time to express their thoughts.
Use everyday experiences—like cooking or shopping—to introduce new words and concepts.
