Course Description

The Grades K–5 English Language Arts program utilizes Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), 3rd Edition, published by Amplify, to deliver systematic, explicit, and knowledge-rich literacy instruction grounded in the Science of Reading and the Science of Writing. Instruction is designed to build strong foundational skills in decoding and transcription through daily, structured practice while simultaneously developing language comprehension, vocabulary, and background knowledge.

Students engage with meaningful, complex texts across science, social studies, literature, and the arts through interactive read-alouds, decodable chapter books, trade books, and content-rich readers aligned to instructional goals. Daily writing instruction strengthens clarity, organization, and purpose, reinforcing connections between reading and written expression.

The program incorporates built-in scaffolds, supports, and extensions to ensure access and challenge for all learners, including multilingual and English learners. Instructional routines emphasize whole-group, small-group, and individualized learning opportunities so that every student can progress toward grade-level proficiency.
