Optional Fall Reflections (for summer hours): Tuesday, September 23, 2025, after school
Mandatory Service Learning Reflections: Tuesday, April 14, 2026, after school
Option A is when a teacher integrates service learning into their instruction, connecting community service to the goals and standards of a specific course. This service may take place during class or outside school hours. For example, social studies students might participate in election campaigns, English students write "Books of Hope" for students in Uganda, and Spanish students publish bilingual brochures for new Mesa residents.
School-sponsored clubs can also be part of Option A, with group reflections and hours submitted to the coach. Examples include NHS members running school-wide drives, Health Science students interning at care centers, and Business or Graphics students designing websites for non-profits.
To record Option A hours, teachers/sponsors can either request a set of time cards from Ms. Bishop or provide her with the following:
List of student names and six-digit ID numbers
A brief description of the activity
The number of hours each student earned
Step 1: Choose where you’d like to volunteer and contact the organization to confirm they need volunteers (non-profit only).
Step 2: Complete the Service Learning Application to explain your activity to Ms. Bishop for pre-approval.
Step 3: Ms. Bishop will review your application. If approved, she will email you a time card. If denied, you'll receive an explanation. Hours must be pre-approved to count.
Step 4: Volunteer, record your hours, get signatures, and keep your time card.
Step 5: Participate in a Reflection Activity in April, sharing your experience with a small group of students and a faculty member. Ms. Bishop will send you details via email.
Step 6: After completing your Reflection and submitting your time card, Ms. Bishop will ensure your hours are recorded on your transcript. All 200 hours must be finished by early April of Senior Year for the Honor for Excellence in Service Learning.
