Sturdy Structures
Standards-
SC23.2.2 Conduct investigations to determine suitable uses of natural and manufactured materials based on their observable properties, including strength, flexibility, hardness, absorbency, and texture.
SC23.2.10 Use a variety of sources to provide evidence that Earth’s events can occur slowly or rapidly.
Objective: Students will use the Engineering Design Process to design and construct a structure to withstand an "earthquake."
Directions: "You have been hired by Better Built Structures, Inc. to design a new and improved building." Students will plan and build a structure using the following materials: cardstock tubes, index cards, popsicle sticks, and tape. Once built, students will test their structure's ability to withstand a simulated earthquake for at least10 seconds, all while keeping a stack of Post-it notes on top. After testing, students will reflect on their design.
