SC23.1.5. Use information from observations to explain how various external features help living things survive, grow, and meet their needs.
Activity
Objective: Students will explore various habitats using virtual reality (VR) and create a hands-on model showing how an animal’s external features help it survive, reinforcing our science standard through observation and STEM creativity.
Directions: After learning how animals’ body parts help them meet their needs, students used VR headsets to visit habitats such as the Arctic, ocean, rainforest, grasslands, desert, and freshwater. Students selected one animal and designed a mini 3D habitat model that included the animal and a key survival feature they observed.
Guidelines: Students used materials such as construction paper, Play-Doh, pipe cleaners, cotton balls, felt, markers, popsicle sticks, glue, and paper plates as a base. Each model needed to show the habitat, the animal, and at least one external feature that helps it survive. Students were encouraged to be creative in personalizing their habitats.
