(Reading, Grammar, and Writing)
Reading
We use the 4th Grade Open Court Reading curriculum. Students are given a copy of the textbook, but they can also access the material through the McGraw Hill application in Clever. Students have Minor Grades on the weekly reading selections and Major Grades on Fresh Reads related to the skills and strategies that we cover during the weekly selections.
Each 9 Weeks, we also complete a novel study. Below are the titles, authors and covers of the novels that we read.
Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo
The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo
Wonder by R.J. Palacio

Writing
We study many different types of writing. We write letters, narratives, descriptions, opinions, expository pieces and poems. In addition, we use the RACES Strategy to learn how to respond to text-dependent questions. Below is more information on that strategy.
Wordly Wise
Another component of English Language Arts (ELA) is Wordly Wise. We use this book to help expand our vocabulary. Most weeks, students are assigned Lesson parts in which they have to apply various vocabulary words. Wordly Wise is a Minor Grade.
Poems/Book Reports
Finally, each 9 weeks, students are assigned a poem that they need to memorize and recite for a grade. Students are also assigned a book report each 9 weeks that is based on the genre of selections that we have been reading in class. Book Reports are Major Grades.
