Week 5: Sunday October 12, 2025
Happy Sunday! Here's to a new week! And, another short week. We have had some really good days of learning and creating independence in the classroom these past few weeks. I use an I do, we do , you do model in third grade when it comes to working and showing students understand concepts being taught in class. Some are struggling with the independence part of that model. We are working on strategies and gaining self confidence to give work a try on their own once we've done it together. This is big at this age and important. Ask your student about completing independent practice.
This week we will finish our novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret. What a gem! The kids love it-I've read it several times and am in awe of Brian Selznick's creation each time I read it. It also has a movie adaptation called, Hugo! We will be viewing that on Tuesday and comparing and contrasting the book and the movie. Students can bring a drink and snack to school for the movie! Feel free to send extras to share! Thanks for the snacks on Friday! Big hit and much needed.
Academic Updates:
Literacy
We have been studying many third grade standards in literacy. We have worked on main idea, key details, compare and contrast and writing a short opinion paragraph in the correct form. Students are driven and working hard. We used our Storyworks September to study many of these key skills.
Reader’s Theater- We are right in the middle of our reader’s theater production. We use these each month to practice fluency, practice presenting and performing, gaining confidence, team building with your play group. Ask your child what play they are in and what their favorite part is.
We perform for Ms. Donahoe on Monday
Math
Unit 1 :-Addition and Subtraction strategies and review. We just took our post-test and will be beginning Unit 2 (Multiplication) after MEA.

Social Studies
We kicked off our Government Unit this week. We are focusing in on what it means to live in a democracy, citizenship, key components of government including the branches of government. We will end our unit learning about the voting process. We will also examine and research activists who have helped fight for our rights both in the past and present. Ask your student about their rights vs. responsibilities of living in a democracy.

We started buddy rooms on Friday 10/10! Our parnters this year are Kindergarten with Ms. Donahoe. 3rd graders are thrilled to be the older kids this time! They were such good leaders. We will meet them 2x a month the whole school year.
Fridays we PLAY (for 20ish minutes) and interact in a meaningful way!! We work hard and play hard. No screens- just a time to chill and do something fun and creative with friends in class.
Play practice is hard work! It's fun but 3rd graders have team meetings to assess what is going well and what needs to change! Our leaders make sure all voices are being heard! Just like in a democracy. Ask your student what play they are in. Parents will be invited in to view a play or two this year. Stay tuned.
208 Community!! A dynamic, fun, inquisitive and thoughtful group of students!
Silly Morning Greetings! This day we pretended to take selfies! Then we actually did a few!
Independent Reading happens daily! ALL readers are reading! We've built up 20 minutes of Stamina.
Standing desks, wobble stools and comfy seating give students an opportunity to move around, stretch, work in a variety of settings throughout the day!
Students collaborate by playing math games to support concepts in class!
