FINE ARTS
The Fine Arts department at Thomas Edison High School provides students with a variety of artistic opportunities that can fulfill their two-semester fine arts requirement. These courses will help students develop a range of 21st century creative skills. In addition to beginning, intermediate and advanced level coursework, there are many exceptional opportunities available for students including: Art-a-Whirl; Viva City (downtown library) art show; Yearly mural projects; Artist Residencies, and field trips to museums and local art galleries/studios.

STUDIO ART
Course Duration: Semester
Course Description:
This class is an introduction to a variety of materials or “media”! There will be a wide range of independent projects such as embroidery, zine making, illustration with colored pencil, and cardboard sculptures. The foundations of Art and Design will be covered within the context of art making. Students will acquire the vocabulary and technical skills specific to each medium, and work as artists do: planning, experimenting, revising and self-evaluating. As the semester progresses, students will participate in small critiques, cultivating their evaluative skills.
ADVANCED ART
Semester Long course (Pre-requisite of two semester of visual art course completion)
Description:
In this student driven course, students are offered varying opportunities in 2-and 3-dimensional media. Art-making opportunities will include ceramics, painting, drawing and fiber art. Study of art history will also be embedded in the coursework. As students develop their craft they will conduct thoughtful inquiry into their own thinking and art making processes.
APPLIED ART
Semester Long course
Description:
Applied Arts explores mediums that are often considered outside the realm of fine arts. Art-making opportunities will include weaving, dyeing, and pottery.. Students will also study cultural influences on crafts, how they are regarded in today’s society, and the role of crafts in art are explored and discussed.
DRAWING AND PAINTING 1
Course Duration: Semester
Course Description:
Students will develop basic drawing skills and techniques including drawing from observation; gain an understanding of the historic role of drawing in visual art; develop a working visual language and core artistic vocabulary; critique and make revisions to their work; and develop an awareness of good composition. Students will study the history of painting in multiple cultures; learn and apply the basic principles of color theory; explore a variety of painting media and techniques including watercolor and acrylics. They will use artistic foundations to create and develop quality paintings; participate in class critique; and revise work accordingly.

IB VISUAL ART YEAR 1
Course Duration: 1 Year
Course Description:
IB Visual Art will familiarize students with skills, techniques, processes and vocabulary with which to approach an in-depth investigation of art. Each student will develop their artistic ideas independently but within a framework of diverse social, cultural and historical context. Students will practice critical analysis of works of art, hone their technical skills and synthesize art research to enhance their artistic production. Working in a process journal documenting ideas, intentions, practice, experimentation, modifications, and reflections is a large part of this class. Much of the work in this class is independent and self-directed, and writing is an integral part of the artistic process.
IB VISUAL ART YEAR 2
Course Duration: 1 Year
Course Description:
IB Visual Art Year 2 will continue the development of the portfolio of art and process portfolios created within Year 1. Students will have additional art history requirements with research and creation of artwork inspired by chosen artworks of study. Additionally, students will learn to organize a digital portfolio for submission online for IB Assessments, and will create and host an exhibition to showcase the work created within the 2 year course. Much of the work in this class is independent and self-directed, and writing is an integral part of the artistic process.

Course Description:
This is a music listening class - not a performance class. In this course students will learn how to understand, analyze, write and talk about music. Using listening examples that span history and the globe, we will discuss how the elements of music can be combined in limitless ways. (Pre-IB music)

POETRY AND COLLABORATIVE SONGWRITING

Course Description:
Students will learn how to create music using technology. This is an introductory project-based-learning class. We will be using SoundTrap, an online collaborative digital audio workstation (DAW). Students may participate in class as lyricists or music-makers!

Course Description:
Students in this course will learn choral singing and performance techniques. Singers will learn how to read music and prepare songs for group performance. Students are required to sing during class each day and perform group concerts after school each quarter. No experience necessary.

Course Description:
Advanced singers, instrumentalists and electronic musicians will continue to improve their skills through independent practice and collaborative feedback. The focus of this course is to prepare and record an album of solo student performances.

IB MUSIC
Course Duration: 2 year IB course
Course Description:
This course is designed for advanced music students who are seeking additional challenges beyond their Edison music classes. IB music is offered as an online course and is intended to be taken together with another music ensemble such as concert band, jazz band, orchestra or choir. Students should consider their relative experience, command for music theory and desire to perform as a soloist before signing up for this course. Students must be self-driven and motivated in order to be successful.

THEATRE
PERFORMANCE THEATRE I

Course Description:
This is an acting class, but there's more...Students will learn the physical and vocal techniques needed to effectively present in front of an audience. These skills can be transferred to many different contexts such as being a news reporter, acing a job interview or delivering a press conference. We will use dance, singing, scene work and theatrical games to build performance confidence and stage presence.

PERFORMANCE THEATRE II

Course Description:
This is not an acting class. Experienced singers, dancers, actors and tech crew are invited to improve their craft through independent projects and work that directly supports the TEHS theater program. Each semester will be framed around the theater productions that perform during that term. Independent projects might include monologue work, preparing for arts school or scholarship auditions or creating an original set design for a play. Class activities might include building set or costume pieces, creating tutorials and organizing workshops for the student community or production rehearsal.

COSMETOLOGY
Health and Beauty 102 & 201

Course Description:
The Health and Beauty course is an overview of cosmetology theory and skills at a beginning level. The purpose of this course is to help students explore and develop fundamental knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for a career in the Cosmetology Industry and related fields. The emphasis is on hair care, hair styling, hair cutting, nail care, skin care, infection control, communication, basic electricity, anatomy and physiology, career opportunities, life skills, professional image, permanent waves, chemical relaxers, reformation curl, hair color, MN cosmetology laws and rules, and safety and sanitation,
The hands-on workshops for this class will include: Shampooing, Conditioning Treatments, Scalp Massage, Curling Iron Techniques, Blow Drying Techniques, Finger Waving, Pin Curls, Roller Sets, Basic Manicure and Pedicure, Facial, Perm Blocking, Basic Permanent Wave Wrap, Virgin and Retouch Relaxer applications and Color application methods.
