Varsity Band is designed for middle school students who have 0-1 years of experience on their instruments, or are learning a new instrument. Firebird Band rehearses every day for the full school year.
In this course of study, students will master basic note reading, and proper performance techniques on their instruments. Students will be expected to practice individually, outside of the school day (homework) as well as complete some written assignments. The course will use Essential Elements, vol. I
Students showing determined effort and consistent progress toward mastery of their instruments will be invited to continue in Concert Band.
Students are expected to commit to consistent, individual practice of at least 120 Minutes per week.
As a Performing Arts Magnet School, Folwell has a distinguished music department in the Minneapolis public school district. Nurturing the habits of excellence-in-performance, comprehensive musicianship and music literacy are paramount objectives to the aim of establishing a solid foundation for students to become successful lifelong musicians.

Instruments should be taken home daily, leaving Folwell’s band instrument lockers empty Practice logs are to be signed once per week by parents. Home practice makes up 20% of student grades; if practice logs are not turned in, the best mark students will receive in the class is a “B.”
