What do MPS students learn in high school social studies?
In high school, our students take 5 courses, or college credit option that aligns:
World History (year-long course)
U.S. History (year-long course)
Human Geography (1 semester course)
US Government (1 semester course )
Economics (1 semester course)
The sequence of courses varies by school, as does the menu of advanced courses offered. To see which advanced courses can substitute for the courses above, see the Rigorous Course Waiver page.
Minnesota Standards & Benchmarks
Standards and benchmarks are the words used to describe the list of learning goals for each course.
In the 2020-21 school year the Minnesota Department of Education is going through the process of evaluating and updating the standards. Their decisions will chart the course of Social Studies in Minnesota for the next 10 years. For more information on this process, check out the MDE Social Studies page.
