International Baccalaureate courses open the world to you, and every class at Southwest High School utilizes the IB framework. At Southwest, we cultivate excellence to empower students to become globally engaged citizens.
Southwest High School prepares students to compete in a global market. Continuously ranked among the best high schools in Minnesota, Southwest challenges students to think critically and engage in their learning.
As an IB World School, we aim to develop inquiring, knowledgeable, and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
IB programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
(MYP)
The Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Southwest is designed for 9th and 10th grade students. It provides a framework of learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. The MYP emphasizes intellectual challenge, encouraging students to make connections between their studies in traditional subjects and the real world. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement—essential qualities for young people who are becoming global leaders.
(CP)
The Career-related Programme (CP) at Southwest enables students in 11th and 12th grade to widen their participation in IB by incorporating the vision and educational principles of IB into a unique program specifically developed for students who wish to engage in career related learning.
Southwest Career–related Program pathways are:
Business, Computer Science, Graphic Arts, Personal and group Fitness Training, Environmental Science and Music.
(DP)
The Diploma Programme (DP) is an internationally-recognized curriculum for students in 11th and 12th grade. The DP courses prepare students to ask challenging questions, learn how to learn, develop a strong sense of self and culture, and develop the ability to communicate with people from different countries and cultures.
At Southwest High School, most 11th and 12th grade courses allow students to register for the IB exam, which allows them to earn a course certificate, the Southwest IB Medallion, or the IB Diploma.
Education is an act of hope in the face of an always-uncertain future. An IB education calls forth the very best in students and educators alike. The IB believes that together we can help to prepare students for living and working in a complex, highly interconnected world.
