Hello! I am Ms. Jennifer Dawn (Ms. Jen)!
I am new to North High this year! Most recently, I was lucky to serve as the Lead ESL teacher at VOA, MERC, Loring, and Stadium View alternative ed high schools. This past spring, I interviewed with North High and was offered a teaching position with the ESL Team!
My Back Story
I have been teaching since 1998! I was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA where I started my teaching career with LAUSD. I miss LA, but have found lots to love about Minneapolis. I have been with Minneapolis Public Schools since I moved here in 2008.
I have two daughters who are 18 & 20; I am forever proud of them! I have two kitties named Cleo & Kiwi who are both crazy. Outside of school, I enjoy spending time with family, friends, animals, nature, music (especially Prince), books, and art.
Language Learning
In my position as an ESL Teacher, I will be collaborating with teachers (especially English Language Arts teachers). Please see me as an English language expert who is here to provide support to students learning English as they work towards full literacy in academic/professional English. For some of you, English is your second language. For others, it could be your 3rd or 4th language! As for me, English is my first language and Spanish is my second language!
I am passionate about language learning and the variety of cultures and languages we have in our world. I look forward to supporting students as they use English in academics! I encourage all people to study beyond their first language! It opens our ability to be able to communicate with one another for a better future!
Warmly,
Ms. Jen
