Teaching Philosophy: I use a stair-step approach to teaching. My philosophy is to meet the student at his or her present art skill level and build from there. As skill levels are reached... then the whole process starts again in stair-step fashion.
Course Offerings:
Painting 1: This is an introductory studio course in the media and techniques of painting. Students will study contemporary artists and art. Projects will emphasize the study of color, composition, creativity and aesthetics. Traditional and experimental techniques will be taught.
Art and Design: This course At the end of this class students will be familiar with the elements and principles of design, art styles and design subjects in Art. Show growth in understanding media and techniques in 2-D drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and 3-D sculptural techniques. Students will communicate "personal ideas" through a body of work. Students will study contemporary art and artists with an emphasis on underrepresented (BIPOC and Women) artists.
About me: I am originally from Canada. I have a BFA and after-degree BEd from the University of Manitoba. I have been teaching Art for the past 24 years, 20 years for MPLS. In my own Art practice I focus on the natural world in my drawing and painting. I live steps away from Minnehaha Creek in the SENA neighborhood, Minneapolis.
I am married to my College sweetheart, we have 2 children. Our oldest just graduated with her MSW from USC LA. I Coach Nordic skiing for SW in the Winter and Bike the rest of the other 3 seasons!
Grades 9-12. Course Objectives: Students will identify and utilize a variety of historical and contemporary painting styles. They will describe and apply the elements and principles of design in their artist statements. They will identify and utilize the principles of color theory in paintings.They will analyze and depict spatial relationships in both realistic and abstract representation. They will write artist statements, participate in Gallery Walks/peer critiques, and present their work for student exhibition.
Grades 9-12. Art and Design includes drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, collage, and mixed media. Students will investigate and research works of art of contemporary artists. They will develop their own point of views in critiques and self-reflection. They will build skills and techniques to create original 2-D and 3-D works of art. They will write artist statements, participate in Gallery Walks/peer critiques, and present their work for student exhibition.
