Quarter 4

Ancient Civilizations Board Games and Hummus-Making

We had a blast playing our board games and learning even more about ancient civilizations! Students did a fantastic job using their creativity and knowledge to create their own games. We also enjoyed making hummus with a bike and blender and sampling our recipe after working up an appetite!

Fun with Sound Vibrations and Pitch:

We are learning about sound vibration and how sound travels. We could see, feel, and hear the evidence of sound vibrations as we experimented with a tuning fork, water, paper, and a ping pong ball. We also discovered the relationship between pitch and length of the tube/wooden sticks.

April 2023 Classroom Update

We kicked off the fourth quarter with the annual third grade dulcimer project, guided by the talented musician Ross Sutter! The students have had great fun building their own dulcimers and learning how to play several songs. We will be practicing over the next couple of weeks and will look forward to welcoming families to Lake Harriet for the concert on May 12!

Math:   In math we've continued our study of geometry, including quadrilaterals, area, and perimeter. Students will take the unit 6 test on April 20. Next week we will spend a few days preparing for the MCA, which students will take on May 1 & 2. After that we will start unit 7, Extending Multiplication and Fractions. Students should continue to complete work in their Home Connections book for extra practice.

Literacy:   We have recently start Benchmark unit 7, Communities Then and Now. Students continue to read passages to identify the main idea and key details. In addition, we have meet daily in small reading groups to do a variety of activities: word work, MCA practice, and novel studies. Please look for the weekly spelling and vocabulary words on Google Classroom. Students will take the reading MCA over two days on April 24 & 25.

Social Studies:   We've wrapped up our learning on Ancient Civilizations. Students now have the opportunity to "show what they know" by designing an ancient civilizations board game! Students will have time to research in class, but the bulk of the project will be completed outside of school, with the final due date of May 15. Please see expectations and guidelines here and don't hesititate to reach out with any questions!
