Students will participate in classroom instruction and in individual and team activities designed to develop attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary to maintain personal fitness for a lifetime. Fifty percent of the course focuses on classroom instruction in personal fitness, nutrition, mental health, First Aid CPR AED, family relationships, disease prevention and control, and substance abuse prevention. Selected Family Life Education (FLE) topics are included in this course.

Students continue to participate in classroom instruction and in individual and team activities designed to develop attitudes, knowledge, and skills necessary to maintain personal fitness for a lifetime. Forty percent of the course focuses on classroom instruction in health concepts, and classroom driver education. Classroom driver education consists of a minimum of 36 hours of classroom instruction and the 90 minute Partners for Safe Teen Driving presentation. Classroom Driver Education includes topics such as motor vehicle laws, vehicle controls, influences on driver behavior, adverse conditions, responsible driving behaviors, time and space management, and basic maneuvers. This course follows the Virginia Standards of Learning for Driver Education classroom instruction. As mandated by the Virginia General Assembly, a 90-minute Partners for Safe Teen Driving presentation is also required for classroom completion. The parent/guardian and teen driver must attend this presentation together (§22.1-205 of the Code of Virginia). Students will not be issued a Driver Education classroom completion card (DEC-1) until this requirement is met.
Grades 11-12 Credit 1
Recommended: Successful completion of Health and Physical Education 9 and 10 with a “C” or better. Students who choose to enroll in a second year of an Advanced Physical Education Course must have completed the first year of Advanced Physical Education with a “B” or better and receive a recommendation from the Advanced PE teacher.
This course, designed for students to learn proper lifting techniques, spotting methods, weight room safety and workout routines, incorporates activities to include, but are not limited to, a multitude of lifts utilizing free weights and machine weights, as well as an emphasis on conditioning, fitness and health risk factors related to lifestyles and how nutrition affects wellness. This course also focuses on the five health-related components of fitness including cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, and body fat control. Individual student fitness levels are assessed. The course may include classroom instruction as well as individual and team activity. This course may be repeated for credit.
