Mission Statement

Mineral Point School Libraries' mission is to foster a love of learning and empower students to become critical thinkers, responsible global citizens, and lifelong learners.

We provide a vibrant and inclusive space that promotes a culture of reading, supports information literacy skills, and encourages curiosity and intellectual exploration.

Through dynamic resources, innovative programs, and dedicated support, we aim to inspire a passion for knowledge that extends beyond the classroom, nurturing independent learning and personal growth.

Welcome to the Mineral Point School Libraries! Our library goals are continuous and constantly evolving. For this reason, we are creating a long-term plan that includes all of the wedges in the Future Ready Librarian Framework with a plan to focus on two or three per year. This is a living document to guide and document our work and goals while remaining flexible to meet the needs of our students and community.

2023 - 2025 Goals

Create monthly communications to share reading, learning, and digital citizenship practices, tech tips, etc.
Sponsor annual One Book One School reads.
Develop a plan to empower student literacy leaders/influencers.
Participate in the WI Science Festival by hosting a MP Family Science Night to celebrate science literacy in our schools and community

Participate in PBS Wisconsin Literacy Cohort
Investigate educational uses and responsibilities around artificial intelligence (AI) in PK-12 schools and share new learning with staff and students.

Research investing in an education technology evaluation tool to give staff one place to find and request edtech tools that are compliant with current student data privacy standards.

Literacy

Inspires and supports the reading lives of both students and teachers. Creates inclusive collections that acknowledge and celebrate diverse experiences and provide instructional opportunities to empower learners as effective users and creators of information and ideas.

Current Status

We love books and reading!
Actively curate collections that are diverse, inclusive, and appealing.
Build bookrooms to support community among readers and choice reading.
Student book budget team facilitates interview skills, data collection, evaluation, critical analysis, decision-making, and budget/purchasing skills.
Active book clubs engage readers and foster discussion skills.
Collaborate with teachers to provide book tastings,
Share knowledge gained from regular reading of reviews, following literacy exemplars, and personal reading.

Goals

Create a monthly family newsletter to share reading, learning, and digital citizenship practices, tech tips, etc. Contributed to building principals' family and staff newsletters.
Sponsor annual One Book One School reads. Facilitated K - 8 reading of The Wild Robot.
Develop a plan to empower student literacy leaders/influencers. Ongoing.
Participate in the WI Science Festival by hosting a MP Family Science Night to celebrate science literacy in our schools and community. Events were held during October in 2023 and 2024.

Personalized Professional Learning

Leads professional learning to cultivate broader understanding of the skills that comprise success in a digital age (e.g. critical thinking, information, literacy, digital citizenship, technology competencies, etc.)

Current Status

Provide individual and group PD on physical and digital resources available through the library.
Model continuous professional development by practicing independent lifelong learning and attending training and conferences.
Network with professional organizations including WEMTA, ALA, WiLS, ISTE, WI DPI School Librarian PLC, CESA 3 Libraries, etc.

Goals

Participate in PBS Wisconsin Literacy Cohort. Attended year-long cohort meetings.
Investigate educational uses and responsibilities around artificial intelligence (AI) in PK-12 schools and share new learning with staff and students. Attended professional development sessions at SLATE and WEMTA, and presented our learning to staff.

Data & Privacy

Teaches and promotes student data privacy through their instruction and role as educational leaders.

Current Status

District-wide instruction and modeling of digital citizenship including responsible and ethical use of technology, personal responsibility and safety in a digital world, and advocating for a healthy balance of screentime.
Provide information, instruction, and resources on copyright, fair use, and data privacy

Goals

Research investing in an education technology evaluation tool to give staff one place to find and request edtech tools that are compliant with current student data privacy standards. Attended SLATE, scheduled meetings with Veracity, met with MPTech and administration, and determined it was cost-prohibitive to invest at this time.

Curriculum, Instruction, & Assessment

Partners with educators to design and implement evidence-based curricula and assessments that integrate elements of deeper learning, critical thinking, information literacy, digital citizenship, creativity, innovation and the active use of technology.

Encourages and facilitates students to become increasingly self-directed as they create digital products of their learning that engage them in critical thinking, collaboration and authentic, real-world problem solving.

Leads in the selection, integration, organization, and sharing of digital resources and tools to support transformational teaching and learning and develop the digital creation skills of others.

Current Status

Collaborate with teachers to plan library instruction that supports and augments district classroom curriculum.
PK - 6 weekly instruction focused on critical thinking, information literacy, digital citizenship, creativity, innovation and the active use of technology.
Research and acquire print and digital resources to support reading, learning, and creativity.
Maintain and update library websites to provide easy access to resources for teaching and learning.
Celebrate fifth-grade film production at the Mineral Point Opera House with a film festival
Teach Media 1 to increase information and media literacy and digital creativity
Support Pointer Media by providing tools, resources, and outside educational opportunities such as field trips to UW-Platteville & UW-Madison to see game day management in operation, photography classes at The Camera Company, and website design and management provided by the SNO Academy.

Robust Infrastructure

Provides and advocates for equitable access to connectivity, digital devices, information, resources, programming, and services in support of the district’s strategic vision.

Current Status

Manage and distribute computers, hotspots, and other equipment used for creating and learning.
Maintain strong relationships with and communicate directly with outsourced technology support.
Advocate for needed equipment to support district goals.

Budget and Resources

Leverages an understanding of school and community needs to identify and invest in digital resources to support student learning.

Current Status

Strategically plan and research resources to responsibly manage Wisconsin Common School Funds
Communicate with staff to provide resources that enhance and expand classroom learning.
Seek student input in selection to foster personal learning and interests.
Intentional curation of diverse library resources so every student sees positive representations of themselves and others.
Supplement current district and state funding by seeking grants and donations.

Community Partnerships

Cultivates partnerships within the school and local community (families and caregivers, non-profit organizations, government agencies, public and higher education libraries, businesses, etc.) to promote engagement and a lifelong learning process.

Work closely with Mineral Point Public Library

Use of Time & Space

Provides flexible spaces that promote inquiry, creativity, collaboration and community.

Current Status

Ongoing organization and creation of spaces to facilitate individual, small, and large group activities and learning.
Regular review and reorganization of space to meet current needs and inspire learners.
Monitor study halls and host classes for instruction, reading days, and speakers.
Continuously updating maker spaces and a "third space" for brain breaks, creativity, and personal learning.
Provide Open Library nights and after-school Maker Club.

Collaborative Leadership

Participates in setting the district’s vision and strategic plan for digital learning and fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation to empower teachers and learners.

Current Status

Network with professional organizations including WEMTA, ALA, WiLS, ISTE, WI DPI School Librarian PLC, CESA 3 Libraries, etc.
Communicate regularly with administrators.
Participate in the Instructional Leadership team and other building initiatives to increase social, emotional, and learning opportunities for students and staff.
