What is Somatic Counselling?
Somatic counselling is a therapeutic approach that helps uncover, explore, and resolve emotional material that you’re currently struggling with, or maybe buried deep in your psyche - often influencing your life in disruptive ways with or without your conscious awareness.
This process combines open dialogue, reflective thinking, and mindful attention to the physical sensations associated with stored or current emotions. These sensations are often the body’s way of signalling unresolved emotional experiences.
By tuning into these bodily sensations, we can fully experience our emotions. However, before diving into this deeper work, we first focus on establishing emotional safety - ensuring that you have the tools and support to avoid becoming overwhelmed.
Through this process, you’ll learn to engage with your emotions without being consumed by them. This capacity to stay grounded while feeling deeply is what allows emotional experiences to be processed and eventually resolved.
What to Expect:
A typical session begins with a conversation about what brings you here and setting some initial goals. From there, we slow down and tune into how your body responds - especially as you think or talk about the situations that are currently distressing. Once you can identify how those emotions manifest physically, we take one of two paths:
1) If there’s a sense of overwhelm, we begin by cultivating a state of calm and safety. You’ll learn techniques to help your nervous system return to a regulated state.
2) When it feels safe to proceed, we shift into simply noticing and allowing those physical sensations to arise - without trying to analyze or change them. It’s as if your mind becomes a compassionate listener, giving your body the space to express itself in its own language of sensation.
When your body is heard and accepted just as it is, it often begins to release the emotional weight it has been holding - leaving your mind and body free of baggage and distress.
