Happy Thursday! It's almost the end of the last full school week of the year!
Today during math we learned about turning an improper fraction into a mixed number, vice versa, and finding new names for mixed numbers. We played an online game that focused on the latter on McGraw-Hill with a partner, then we talked as a class about it a bit more. Our last activity was a game with cut out paper cards with our same partner. We had to each get six improper fractions or mixed numbers, and draw another card. We discarded any that were equal to that card. The first player to get rid of all their cards won.
During Language Arts we talked about comparing characters from different stories and seeing how they relate to the same theme. We did several examples as a class, and we did a jot about it for our Good Fit books, any read aloud book, or any book we'd read. We also had book club meetings today.
For WIN time we did an exit slip, worked on our goal for 10 minutes, worked on our spelling words sort, quizzed a partner on our spelling words, and read our book club or Good Fit book.

Wednesday, December 15
Happy Wednesday!
Today during math we worked on equivalent fractions, since in our fractions unit, Mr. Sprenger said that the resource we use for math, Everyday Math, seems to think that we have more knowledge on equivalent fractions, but with the craziness of last year, we probably didn't learn as much about them.
During Language Arts we reviewed the 3 strategies to finding the theme of a book, and we learned about a new theme-related method. After we find the theme, we use a number line that looks like this:
Not as connected Connected to the theme
and we put our characters on the ratio. We did a jot where we used this technique.
For WIN time we did Duolingo, Typing Club, Code.org, or a specific section in IXL for 10 minutes, worked on our goal for 10 minutes, got started on our homework sheet, worked on our book club assignment, and read our Good Fit book.

Happy Tuesday!
Today during math we talked more about solving fraction problems and using benchmarks to make conjunctures. We played the online fraction game, Build It on McGraw-Hill, with a partner. We also played a new game with a partner, using numbered cards. Each player would draw 3 numbered cards and use them to make the biggest fraction possible. (The numerator had two cards, which would be added together, and the denominator would have just one card.)
During Language Arts Ms. Lundgren taught us a new strategy for finding theme. We figured out the problem in the book, and used that to find the theme. We also had book club meetings today.
For WIN time we did an exit slip, did Duolingo, Typing Club, Code.org, or a specific section in IXL for 10 minutes, worked on our goal, did a math word problem that was created by a student as part of their daily goal, and got started on our Home Link.

Friday, December 10
Happy Friday! Whew, I'm so glad it's the weekend.
Today during math we worked more on area and volume in a super fun activity! We each chose a partner and we got a small 1-serving Kellogg's cereal box, a ruler, and a packet. We answered volume and surface area questions about the box in the packet, and then the fun part came. At the back of the packet, there was a net for a rectangular prism roughly the same size as the box. We had to make up our own cereal and design the logo for it!
During Language Arts we took a non-fiction summary test, used a tutorial to make a paper snowflake, and worked on a couple of other fun writing activities. There was a blank newspaper page with a headline on it, "Cats, Dogs, Quillie the hedgehog a comfort during crisis," and we had to make up a story that went with it. After that, we could read an article on the real story.
For WIN time we did an IXL, did Duolingo, Typing Club, or Code.org for 10 minutes, had the option to finish our cereal design, worked on our goal, and worked on our book club assignment. Our spelling test has been moved to Monday, so studying that is part of the homework.

For specialist today we had PE.
Just a friendly reminder, no school on Thursday or Friday!
Have a great day!
Friday, October 15
Happy Friday!
During math today we did a math quiz on our unit, which we're almost at the end of. Mr. Sprenger said it was to prepare us for the official unit test next week.
For Language Arts we finished our read aloud, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. We also started a new project with gourds! Everyone gets to pick a (small) gourd, which we'll name and give character traits, decorate it, and write a story about it. It's super exciting.
At WIN time, we finished our math quiz, did our spelling test, and worked more on our gourd project. (Once again, no exit slip today.)
For specialist today we had art.
Just a reminder, the math test's next week!
Have a great weekend!
Thursday, October 14
Happy Thursday!
Today in math we worked more on interpreting remainders in word problems. We also worked more on writing algebraic expressions.
In Language Arts we talked about theme in our books, which is the message of the book. We identified themes in different stories as a class and then did an independent jot about the theme in our Good Fit books. We also read more of the climax in our class read aloud, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. (I can hear your "We've heard that a million times!" already.)
For our WIN time we did a math journal page with an interpreting remainders word problem, did a 6th grade IXL on algebraic expressions, and got started on our Home Link. (No exit slip today!)
Remember, the spelling test is tomorrow! I hope you've studied!
Have a great day!
Oh, right. For specialist today we had music.
Wednesday, October 13
Happy Wednesday!
In math today we worked more on traditional division and algebraic expressions - which was a "blast from the past" as Mr. Sprenger puts it. We also learned about interpreting remainders.
During Language Arts we talked a lot about climaxes in a story and predicted what our main character was going to do in our read aloud. We also did a jot on it that said "If I were Winnie (our main character) I would . We also used our writing rubric and feedback from Mr. Sprenger to write a final draft for our opinion paper.
During WIN time we - wait for it! - did an exit slip, and wrote our own interpreting remainders word problem. We also got started on our homework.
Just remember, there's a spelling test on Friday!
Today for specialist we had science.
Have a great day!
Tuesday, October 12
Happy Tuesday! Time for the update.
Today in math, we learned how to do traditional division! I think about half the class knew how do do it already, or at least had used it before. I was in the half that hadn't.
During Language Arts Ms. Lundgren talked to us about identifying climaxes in stories, because we're in the middle of the climax in our read aloud, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. (Yes, I'm back to saying it every time now.) We also did a jot with our own Good Fit books that said "When is faced with a problem, they ."
During WIN time we worked on an exit slip (surprise, surprise!) and did an IXL. We also got started on our homework, a green Long Division Word Problems sheet.
Today for specialist we had PE.
Have a great rest of your day!
Monday, October 11
Happy Monday, everyone! My deepest apologies for not giving you an update on Thursday.
Today in math we worked even more in long division. We're using the partial quotients method, but Mr. Sprenger said that we'd start with traditional tomorrow.
In Language Arts Ms. Lundgren came and talked to us more about using character traits to make predictions, which we practiced with our read aloud. (I'm not even going to say it because you've heard it way too many times already.)
During WIN (What I Need) time we finished our division sheet from math, did an IXL, and worked on Typing Club for 10 minutes.
Today for specialist we had art.
Also, tomorrow we will be visiting the Book Fair as a class, and students can bring money to purchase books.
Have a great rest of your week!
Wednesday, October 6
Happy Wednesday, everyone!
Today in math we worked more on division using the partial quotients method, and did a partner game that involved three-digit by two-digit multiplication.
In Language Arts Ms. Lundgren came to our classroom as usual (unless it's Friday), and talked to us about using character traits to make predictions. We also got through all of our reading groups.
During WIN time we did our usual exit slip, and this one had three-digit by two-digit division. We also filled out a rubric for our opinion writing, and worked on our Home Links.
I also want to include what specialist we have every day in the daily update. Today we had science.
Remember, no school on Friday!
Tuesday, October 5
Hello everybody! I hope you're having a fantastic first week of October.
Today in math we learned about the partial quotients method of division. We practiced it a lot with two and three-digit divided by one-digit division. But we didn't do a whole lot. To quote Mr. Sprenger, "We're just dipping our toe in the water with this, you guys."
In Language Arts Ms. Lundgren came again and we talked about the problem and the character's response using our read aloud, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit.
But right in the middle of our read aloud, we were interrupted by a loud, screechy noise from the fire alarms. We all set down our stuff and quickly walked outside, and came back in about five minutes later. Thankfully, it was just a spontaneous fire drill.
I also want to start talking a little bit about our WIN (What I Need) time during the daily update. Today we had to do our usual Exit Slip with a few division problems, and we also did a rough draft for an opinion paper based on our read aloud, Tuck Eve - oh, whatever, I don't need to say it again. You know what I'm talking about. Our other part of WIN time was working on a word problem sheet that'll be sent home for homework if it isn't finished.
Happy fall!
Monday, October 4
Happy Monday, everybody!
Today in math we talked more about writing algebraic expressions, and practiced a little bit with it too.
In Language Arts, Ms. Lundgren came to our classroom again, and we talked about developing theories about our characters and using them to find deeper meanings. We're also in a bit of an exciting part in our read aloud, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit. We also jotted about theories and deeper meanings about the characters in our own books.
Just a heads-up, there's no school on Friday!
Have a great week!
Friday, October 1
Whew! It's finally Friday. But it's not only Friday, it's the first day of October! Tell me, am I the only one who's super-excited it's finally fall?
In math we worked more on multiplication and exponents, and did a Classkick where we solved some of the word problems students created last week. We are also taking a quiz so Mr. Sprenger can see where we're at with our unit.
In Language Arts, it was the one sad day of the week when Ms. Lundgren doesn't come to our classroom. We read more of our read aloud, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit, and we talked about determining character traits based on the problem in the book, and the main character's reaction.
Have a fantastic weekend and first week of October!
Thursday, September 30
The first month of school has flown by. I can't believe it's almost over already! But here I am, ready for the daily update.
In math today we went back to practicing multiplication, solving it using either the traditional method or the box method.
In Language Arts we managed to get through all of our reading groups with Ms. Lundgren and Mr. Sprenger. In the groups, we sorted different words into the categories of vowel consonant, vowel consonant consonant, and if it had "ing" at the end, whether you did nothing besides put the ing at the end, or double the letter right before the ing and add the ing. For example, "put" goes to "putting".
We're also doing some opinion writing that goes with our read aloud, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit.
Have a fantastic last day of September!
Wednesday, September 29
Whew! It's almost the end of September already. Can you believe it?
In math today we learned about base numbers and exponents, and exponential notation. It was really interesting, but all of us are on different levels with it.
In Language Arts Ms. Lundgren and Mr. Sprenger talked about finding behavior patterns in book characters and using that to come up with character traits. We got through all the reading groups scheduled for today as well. Today is also Word Power Wednesday, but we're not doing much with that today.
Have a great rest of September!
Tuesday, September 28
Hi everybody! It's time for the daily update.
In math we are still working on algebra, and today we focused on word problems and finding out if the answer is an equation (true) or an inequality (false). It's a little hard to talk about it, as it's very new, advanced, and pretty confusing.
In Language Arts Ms. Lundgren came to our classroom again and talked to us a little bit about character traits. We also filled in a little bit of the story mountain we're working on with our new read aloud, Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit. We also had Book Talk Tuesday, and one person got to go up and present their Book Talk on their Google Slideshow.
Have a great day!
Hi everyone! Apologies for not updating sooner. We've finally figured out a routine, and the updates will be daily from now on!
Today is Monday, September 27. In math we just started a new and exciting unit on algebra! We've been focusing on using variables in number sentences, but today we did a little bit of variable inequalities on a number line. We can't wait to learn more!
Today in Language Arts, Ms. Lundgren came to our classroom and talked about the elements of a story with us! We were supposed to do reading groups as well, but we ran out of time, so the rest of us enjoyed our Good Fit books while just one group met with Mr. Sprenger. The other part of Language Arts was Morpheme Monday, where we focused on the prefix anti, and wrote down the definition, words where it was used, and wrote it into a sentence!
Hope you have a great rest of your week!
Hello! The school year has started, and the fifth graders are busy in the new wing of Sunnyside! Our new teacher, Mr. Sprenger, has kept us on our toes, highlighting our days with projects with Legos and extra recesses to help clear our heads! So far, it's mostly been getting settled and ready for the school year. We've also been taking our pre-tests too. The school year has started, and we can't wait to see what's to come!
Daily updates coming soon courtesy of Delia and Thor!
