They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera
I will admit, this book is one of the better books I’ve read in awhile. It definitely got to me, because, although it’s written for teenagers, and the story is somewhat superficial, the overall message of the book is most definitely not. Set in the future, now present in the world is a company called Deathcast, which calls people daily beginning at 12:00 AM to let them know they will be dying that day. The only thing that Deathcast is able to tell the person is that it will be that particular day; there are no other details. The book is told from two different characters' points of view: Mateo and Rufus, both of whom are Deckers (meaning they received the call from Deathcast). Mateo, who is somewhat of an agoraphobe, and whose father (his only family) is in the hospital in a coma, downloads an app called LastFriend, designed to connect Deckers with another person with whom they can spend their last day. After Rufus is forced to leave his family to run from the police, he also downloads LastFriend and connects with Mateo. The resulting story of their last day (both separately and together) is funny, emotional, and will leave the reader wondering whether or not he or she is actually living, or just existing. A must-read.
