Dear Parents,
Welcome to my website for 8th grade students and their parents!
The page tabs under Parent Resources, Success in School and Growth Mindsets, are a result of research and graduate studies that reflect some of my teaching philosophies concerning failure and mindsets and their influence on a child's success in school and life.
Success in School, contains a short letter and resources that answer questions such as: What if failure could be used to propel us to success? What if we taught our children to look at their mistakes as opportunities to learn? What if we encouraged our children to reflect on their mistakes and ask them what they could do differently?
Growth Mindsets, explains why I believe that the growth mindset is important to instill in students. The video and article resources at the bottom of the page further explain the growth mindset, as well as how parents can encourage the growth mindset attitude.
In addition, you will find links to resources below that may help answer the following questions:
Why are academic standards important?
What will my child be working on this year?
What is important to discuss with my child's teacher?
How can I help my child learn at home?
Sincerely,
Mrs. Limond

Miscellaneous Parent Resources
"7th and 8th Grade Reading: What to Expect" describes what you can do to help your child with the many types of text he or she will be reading in middle school.
"The Parent's Guide to Middle School" provides free access to worksheets and activities supported by the common core standards. Links to middle school essentials, back to school tips, and articles addressing middle school children's academic, social, and developmental issues are also available.
Parental support plays an important part in helping preteens and teens succeed in middle school. But as students grow more independent during these years, it can be hard for parents to know which situations call for involvement and which call for a more behind-the-scenes approach. 10 Ways to Help Your Child Succeed in Middle School is a webpage with links to various resources on this topic. This webpage is also available in Spanish.
Vocabulary.com is a free website that starts with a pretest to determine a learner's vocabulary level. As a person progresses through the various vocabulary levels, the program is designed to review words that were incorrect on previous activities. Vocabulary lists created from literature, speeches, news items, historical documents, and the just for fun collection provide engaging opportunities to learn higher level words. This website also allows individuals to create vocabulary lists from their own word collections.
The Scholastic website has great links to book lists, advice for encouraging reluctant readers, parent guides to popular novels, and other resources for parents.
Please see the Literature Treasures page for book reviews and related resources.
