London Fine & Performing Arts

Course Information

Students will receive 2 credits for the completion of IS 2023: London Fine and Performing Arts


Students are expected to participate in all group cultural activities as delineated in the course itinerary; this includes visits to theatre performances, museums, and historic sites, as well as class discussion sessions. 


Students will acquire and read the plays prior to our viewing the Globe and National Theatre productions.

Students will read handouts on art and analyzing art as supplied by instructors.

Students will be responsible for the following assignments: three theatre reflection papers based on shows attended; three fine art reflection papers based on our museum visits; a final synthesis reflection paper based on cumulative London experience. More specific instructions about assignments are below and will be also provided on site by the instructors.


Theatre papers will count for 30% (each paper approximately 500-750 words)

Art papers will count for 30% (each paper approximately 500-750 words)

Class Discussion will count for 20%

Final Synthesis paper will count for 20% (750+ words)

Day 1: Tuesday May 14

TWIN CITIES Departure. Depart Minneapolis-St. Paul for London on overnight flight.


2: Wednesday May 15 LONDON Arrival. Meet your local guide outside customs. Transfer by private motorcoach to the ST GILES HOTEL for check-in, with an introductory 2-hour guided panoramic orientation tour of the city, with photo opportunity stops when and where possible at Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square and Westminster to view Big Ben.  Evening group dinner at local restaurant. (D)

 

3 Thursday May 16 LONDON. Morning class. Afternoon visit to St. Paul’s Cathedral, includes the crypt & galleries and entrance fee, led by faculty directors. Evening performance TBD, (Performance #1). (B)

 

4 Friday May 17 LONDON. Morning guided tour of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, with site guide included. Late morning or early afternoon visit to the Tate Modern, led by faculty directors.(B)

 

5 Saturday May 18 LONDON. Morning class. Afternoon visit to the V&A Museum, led by faculty directors. (B)

 

6 Sunday May 19 LONDON. Morning and afternoon free for independent exploration. (B)

 

7 Monday May 20 LONDON. Morning 2 hour classroom space at the hotel. Evening pre-theater group dinner. Evening performance. (Performance #2). (B,D)

 

8 Tuesday May 21 LONDON. Morning visit to Westminster Abbey with audio guides entrance and audio guides included. Afternoon visit to the British Museum, led by faculty directors. Evening performance TBD.  (Performance #3).  (B)

 

9 Wednesday May 22 LONDON. Morning guided backstage tour at the National Theatre with site guide included. Afternoon visit to the Tate Britain led by faculty directors, entrance to permanent exhibition. Evening performance TBD (Performance #4). (B)

 

10 Thursday May 23 LONDON. Morning visit to the National Gallery, led by faculty directors, entrance free of charge. Afternoon visit to the National Portrait Gallery, led by faculty directors, entrance free of charge. Evening performance TBD (Performance #5). (B)

12 Saturday May 25 LONDON. Morning visit to Camden Market in North London. (B)

Scholarships

All confirmed students are eligible to receive one of the following scholarships.  In your program application please mention if you intend to join the Peace Corps or if you're traveling internationally for the first time.


Sam and Nancy Schuman Scholarship

a)full-time, b)undergraduate students who are a junior or senior, c)attending the University of Minnesota Morris, d)who demonstrate academic merit, e)participating in an approved study abroad program prior to graduation


Stahman Endowed Scholarship

a) full-time, b) undergraduate students who are sophomores, juniors or seniors, c) attending the University of Minnesota Morris, d) who demonstrate academic merit defined as a minimum GPA of 2.5, e) who are participating in a University approved study abroad program, f) preference will be given to students with a strong interest in serving in the Peace Corps after graduation.


Thornes Family Travel Scholar

A scholarship for full-time, undergraduate degree-seeking students who have never traveled outside of North America to participate in UMN Morris-sanctioned study abroad programs.


MAX Scholarship

Support of educational opportunities for students who wish to enhance their UMM academic career through activities including, but not limited to, internships, studying abroad, community-engaged learning (formerly known as service learning) and undergraduate research.


Konz Study Abroad Scholarship

A scholarship for full-time, undergraduate degree-seeking students who demonstrate academic merit defined as having a GPA of 3.0 or greater, demonstrate financial need and are participating in a University-approved study abroad program with an academic focus. Preference will be given to Economics majors or Business and Management majors.


Study Abroad Scholarship

a) full-time, b) undergraduate students, c) enrolled in the University of Minnesota Morris (UMM) and who have completed at least one academic year at Morris, d) who demonstrate financial need in that they may not otherwise be able to afford the program, e) who demonstrate academic merit further defined as a minimum GPA of 3.0, f) are participating in a UMM approved study abroad program and have provided a compelling and knowledgeable case for why they are choosing their designated program and the outcome they wish to receive from the program.
