Tip: For courses that are delivered partially or completely online, instructors have discretion to indicate on the syllabus the specific action(s) a student would need to take within a specified time period (e.g., post an online discussion group on academic matters, initiating contact with a faculty member to ask a question about an academic course topic, submitting an assignment, taking a quiz) in order to be considered as having attended the online course.
Students may see needed textbooks at https://bookstores.umn.edu/course-materials?store=morris.
Consider using a textbook from the free open textbook library.
Find your Canvas Course Sites at canvas.umn.edu - Each semester, empty academic course sites are automatically generated for all active PeopleSoft sections for every course. Enrollments from PeopleSoft are automatically updated in Canvas approximately every ten minutes. These auto-generated course sites appear on the Canvas dashboard of the primary or secondary instructor assigned in PeopleSoft for that course. These course sites are ready for you to start building in them from scratch, or you may wish to import an existing course site from a previous site.
Tip: Course sites are unpublished and will not be visible to enrolled students until published. Instructors publish their Canvas sites. To hide auto-generated course sites on the Canvas dashboard until they are ready to be worked on, follow these instructions.
Help: If your course site does not appear on your dashboard, reach out to the campus scheduler (Jeri Squier) to ensure you are assigned as the primary or secondary instructor in PeopleSoft.
Auto-generation of unpublished course sites for upcoming terms take place on the following dates:
Fall term: April 16 | Spring term: August 1 | Summer term (including May term): January 3
Tip: Produce a short welcome audio or video for your course. This helps students' orientation to the course.

Work with Chlene as needed to develop your online course materials. Review the UMN Morris Start of Semester Checklist.
You will receive a copy of the Online Learning student course welcome letter for your course linked within your instructor letter. Please review this information and add your revisions. Student course welcome letters are emailed to students by the Online Learning program one week prior to the first day of the term. The student course welcome letter provides students with information about accessing their course, taking proctored exams, if being used, and a checklist depending on student status. Student status checklists are listed below:
● Minnesota high school student - PSEO Student Checklist (no PSEO students in summer courses).
● Student from another University of Minnesota campus - Multi-I Student Checklist.
● Not a degree-seeking student at the University of Minnesota - Nondegree Student Checklist.
● Current degree-seeking student at the Morris campus - UMM Student Checklist.

Chlene can help students with technical difficulties before the first day of class if you make your site available to students. We suggest opening your course the Thursday before classes begin.
Your students will be automatically “fetched” into your Canvas course site, however, they will not be able to access the site until you “publish your site.”
Create a calendar event in Canvas.
Attach a Zoom meeting invite to provide a virtual space that any student in your course can join.
Provide alerts for students in your course: Academic Alerts: Faculty Concerns (For Students Taking Your Course)
Submitting concerns at the first sign of difficulty gives students the best chance for improvement. Some common reasons for submitting concerns include:
Student has several absences, irregular attendance, or has stopped attending class
Assignments, papers, or other work have not been turned completed
Student has received poor grades on assignments, papers, or exams
Student is experiencing difficulty outside of the classroom
Student staff have missed work or expressed other concerns
UMN Morris Online Learning Course SRTs are conducted online by the University of Minnesota Office of Measurement Services using eXplorance Blue.
Students will receive email notification(s) that courses are ready to be evaluated.
They will also be sent up to two reminder emails, if they have not yet taken the online SRT.
Each student and course pair has its own unique link for the SRT.
Students may take the SRT using a desktop computer, laptop, smartphone or other mobile devices.
Links to the SRT are not available to a student once they withdraw from a course.
Faculty action is not needed for online administration, although you may wish to:
Log into the online SRT system, EXPLORANCE BLUE, to check response rates
Remind students to complete the SRT
OMS Guide to Improving Response Rates for Online-Administered SRTs
All SRTs produce an electronic report for each instructor.
The reports for online SRTs contain a summary of all responses, including the open-ended questions.
Online SRT reports will be available approximately three weeks after the last class meeting date in the PeopleSoft system. (This is to account for Finals Week and the 72 hour grade submission window.)
