Welcome to our classroom, I am Mrs. Peterson, and I will be helping your child grow in First Grade this year! I am preparing our classroom to be a great place to grow and learn with your child.
My husband and I have 2 grown children, Kirin and Greger. My husband and I now live in the country with a bunch of animals and a big garden. I am thrilled to be teaching at Morris Area Elementary School, and am looking forward to a great learning year with your child.

Lunch, Snack, and Milk Break

1st grade recess and lunch is from 11:30-12:15

School Snack: $86 (whole year) $43 (half year)
Milk is being provided free this year to all students (Thank you Riverside LLC!)
In our classroom, each student is asked to bring a box of individually wrapped snacks for 18 students once a month, I will put out a box of snacks everyday. This plan is similar to what your student had in Kindergarten. Please put your child’s name on the box/bag so I can ensure we have enough snacks throughout the year for students. We will have snack/milk break at approximately 2:20 p.m.
Students will choose either skim, 1%, or chocolate milk
Water bottles are encouraged, please bring one to class everyday!
Transportation and Field Trips
Bus/Pick up
Unless I receive advance notice, your child will be sent to the typical location you noted on the GREEN after-school transportation from at the Open House night.
Students will only be able to ride to/from home or a designated child care stop.
If you are notifying me of an after school change after 12:00 p.m., please call the office to ensure I get the message.
Field Trips
In 1st grade, our big field trip is to the Chahinkapa Zoo in Wahpeton, ND. We will be going in May. Parents are encouraged to chaperone. Students will be required to ride the bus to and from the school for this school field trip.
We also attend SWELL (Scandia Woods Environmental Learning Lab) twice, once in the fall, and again in the spring.

Our Classroom Expectations
Our first grade behavior motto for this year is – “Help each other Succeed”
In our classroom, students should “Help each other Succeed” by following our four very basic expectations –
Be Kind, Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible
I am a big believer that acknowledging and celebrating your child’s greatness will encourage positive behavior from them. The ultimate goal in our classroom is for every student to feel safe and appreciated.
We will continue to work helping everyone succeed:
be kind, be safe, be respectful and be responsible.
We will be talking about these words together as a class to help with understanding. As parents and guardians, you and I will form a team in regard to your child’s behavior. We share a common goal, and we care about your child while wanting them to have a great year both academically and socially.
My job is to teach, your child’s job is to listen, learn, and grow. I will focus on teaching every student how to control their own behaviors, and the consequences of not following classroom expectations. I will call you, send you an e-mail, or jot you a note if the behavior is something you should be concerned about. This open line of communication is extended both ways. Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns about behavioral issues. Again, I want to make sure that you and I are always on the same page.
Homework
My philosophy on 1st grade homework is this… It is less about practicing the concepts and more about learning & practicing responsibility.
I never give homework on Fridays – your child’s weekend homework is to PLAY!
Take Home Folders
Your child will have one ORANGE plastic folder that they take to and from school. One side will be labeled “Return to School” (those papers need to come back to school) and the other side will be labeled “Keep at Home”(those papers can be taken out of the folder and can stay at home). Please look through and empty this folder nightly.
Math
Students will not have homework very often in Math. In my weekly newsletter, I will put in tips, games and other ways to incorporate math at home.
Phonics
1st graders use a program called Fundations. Fundations provides all students with a strong, evidence-based foundation in reading and spelling skills. I will be sending home a parent letter every unit to explain what we are working on and provide activities for you to practice at home.
Reading
Children will be encouraged to do a reading activity 15-20 minutes a night! This could include reading silently, reading to an adult, being read to by an adult, practicing words, doing RAZKids on the computer…. or a combination of several of these! At the beginning of October, every Monday your child will receive “good-fit books.” These books will stay in their clear plastic folder on the return side all week. Your child will continue to bring their clear plastic folder home each night and bring it back to school every day, however, they will only receive new books on Mondays. Please record these books and any other books that your child has read or you have read to them on the green reading log sheet and please keep the green reading log sheet inside the clear plastic folder. At the beginning of each month, if your child has completed the log they will receive a certificate for a mini personal pan pizza from Pizza-Hut. Thank you!

Birthdays
Birthday invitations should NOT be handed out at school, unless all students in the class are invited. Please contact the office if you need other students’ addresses.
Birthday treats are welcome, but not required and MUST be store bought.
Summer birthdays will be celebrated on their half birthdays.
Snow
Please make sure to write your child’s name on ALL of their snow clothing. Please send your child’s snow clothing along every day (when we get to that time of the year). We will inform them whether they HAVE to wear a certain article or not. Also, please be watching for 2 hours late, early outs, or school closings.
Family Vacations
If you will be removing your child from school for 5+ days for a family vacation, please request a family vacation form to be filled out and returned to the office.
Technology
We will have IPads available to use throughout the year. We will frequently use the programs IXL, RAZKids, and EPIC. We are eager and excited to use this interactive equipment available to us! ☺ Check my website to play these educational games at home.

(When ordering online, the book order is due by the due date that is on our weekly newsletter. If I receive the online order after the due date, the order will not be submitted. Personal Items
I would recommend not allowing your child to bring toys or other gadgets to school. If an item is broken or stolen the school is not responsible for those items.
Volunteers/Visitors
MAES welcomes visitors and volunteers. All visitors are to enter through the front doors and report to the elementary office to sign-in and state their business at the school (state law requirement). A visitor’s badge will be issued to simplify verify that you are authorized to be in the building.
Volunteer Background Checks
Volunteer - someone who comes into school on a regular basis working with students, anyone that chaperones on a field trip
All volunteers need to have a background check on file with the office.

Bocadillo/Leche
Merienda escolar: $86 (todo el año) $43 (medio año)
La leche para la merienda es gratis para todos (¡Gracias, Riverview LLC!)
Los estudiantes pueden elegir leche descremada, con 1% de grasa o con chocolate.
En nuestra clase, cada estudiante debe traer una caja/bolsa de meriendas para 18 estudiantes cada mes. Serviré meriendas todos los días. Por favor, escriba el nombre de su hijo/a en la caja/bolsa para asegurarme de tener suficientes meriendas durante todo el año. Tendremos un receso para la merienda/leche a las 2:20 p. m.
Se recomienda traer botellas de agua; por favor, ¡traigan una a clase todos los días!
Transporte y excursiones
Autobús/Recogida
A menos que reciba un aviso previo, su hijo será enviado al lugar típico que anotó en el transporte VERDE después de la escuela en la noche de puertas abiertas.
Los estudiantes solo podrán viajar hacia/desde casa o una parada de cuidado infantil designada.
Si me notifica sobre un cambio después de la escuela después de las 12:00 p. m., llame a la oficina para asegurarse de recibir el mensaje.
Excursiones
En 1er grado, nuestra gran excursión es al Zoológico Chahinkapa en Wahpeton, Dakota del Norte. Iremos en mayo. Se anima a los padres a ser acompañantes. Se requerirá que los estudiantes viajen en autobús hacia y desde la escuela para esta excursión escolar.
También asistimos a SWELL (Scandia Woods Environmental Learning Lab) dos veces, una en otoño y otra en primavera.

Creo firmemente que reconocer y celebrar la grandeza de su hijo fomentará un comportamiento positivo en él. El objetivo final en nuestro salón de clases es que cada estudiante se sienta seguro y apreciado.
Continuaremos trabajando para ayudar a todos a tener éxito:

Hablaremos juntos sobre estas palabras como clase para ayudar con la comprensión. Como padres y tutores, usted y yo formaremos un equipo con respecto al comportamiento de su hijo. Compartimos un objetivo común y nos preocupamos por su hijo y al mismo tiempo queremos que tenga un gran año tanto académica como socialmente.
Mi trabajo es enseñar, el trabajo de su hijo es escuchar, aprender y crecer. Me concentraré en enseñar a cada estudiante cómo controlar su propio comportamiento y las consecuencias de no seguir las expectativas del aula. Lo llamaré, le enviaré un correo electrónico o le escribiré una nota si el comportamiento es algo que debería preocuparle. Esta línea abierta de comunicación se extiende en ambos sentidos. Tarea
Mi filosofía sobre las tareas de primer grado es la siguiente... Se trata menos de practicar los conceptos y más de aprender y practicar la responsabilidad.
Nunca doy tarea los viernes: ¡la tarea de fin de semana de su hijo es JUGAR!
Carpetas para llevar a casa
Su hijo tendrá una carpeta de plástico NARANJA que llevará y traerá de la escuela. Un lado tendrá la etiqueta "Regreso a la escuela" (esos papeles deben regresar a la escuela) y el otro lado tendrá la etiqueta "Guardar en casa" (esos papeles se pueden sacar de la carpeta y quedarse en casa). Revise y vacíe esta carpeta todas las noches.
Matemáticas
Los estudiantes no tendrán tarea muy a menudo en Matemáticas. En mi boletín semanal incluiré consejos, juegos y otras formas de incorporar las matemáticas en casa.
Fónica
Los estudiantes de primer grado utilizan un programa llamado Fundaciones. Fundamentos proporciona a todos los estudiantes una base sólida basada en evidencia en habilidades de lectura y ortografía.
Lectura
¡Se animará a los niños a realizar una actividad de lectura de 15 a 20 minutos por noche! Cumpleaños
NO se deben repartir invitaciones de cumpleaños en la escuela, a menos que todos los estudiantes de la clase estén invitados. Comuníquese con la oficina si necesita las direcciones de otros estudiantes.
Los obsequios de cumpleaños son bienvenidos, pero no son obligatorios y DEBEN comprarse en la tienda.
Los cumpleaños de verano se celebrarán en su medio cumpleaños.
Nieve
Asegúrese de escribir el nombre de su hijo en TODA su ropa para la nieve. Por favor envíe la ropa para la nieve de su hijo todos los días (cuando lleguemos a esa época del año). Les informaremos si TIENEN que llevar una determinada prenda o no. Además, esté atento durante 2 horas tarde, salidas temprano o cierres de escuelas.
Vacaciones familiares
Si sacará a su hijo de la escuela por más de 5 días para unas vacaciones familiares, solicite que complete un formulario de vacaciones familiares y lo devuelva a la oficina.
Tecnología

Pedidos de libros escolares
Enviaré a casa pedidos de libros de Scholastic mensualmente y realizaré pedidos en línea únicamente. Si desea pedir libros en línea:

(Al realizar un pedido en línea, el pedido del libro vence en la fecha de vencimiento que figura en nuestro boletín semanal. Si recibo el pedido en línea después de la fecha de vencimiento, el pedido no se enviará. Espero que esté construyendo una biblioteca de libros en casa. (Los profesores reciben puntos extra que se utilizan para los libros en el aula:)
Artículos personales
Recomendaría no permitir que su hijo traiga juguetes u otros aparatos a la escuela. Si un artículo se rompe o es robado, la escuela no es responsable de esos artículos.
Voluntarios/Visitantes
MAES da la bienvenida a visitantes y voluntarios. Todos los visitantes deben ingresar por las puertas principales y presentarse en la oficina de la primaria para registrarse y declarar su negocio en la escuela (requisito de la ley estatal). Se emitirá una credencial de visitante para simplificar la verificación de que está autorizado a estar en el edificio.
Verificación de antecedentes voluntaria
Voluntario: alguien que viene a la escuela regularmente trabajando con los estudiantes, cualquiera que sea acompañante en una excursión.
Todos los voluntarios deben tener una verificación de antecedentes registrada en la oficina.
