Two of my favourite poets are Rupi Kaur and R.H sin (although a male he writes poems for women, specifically in relation to his wife).
The work is short and punchy, and from the books of theirs that I own ( Milk and Honey by Rupi Kaur, A beautiful composition of broken by R.H Sin), I re-read them and gathered the poems that I think best related to my project.
These poems explored themes of womanhood, sisterhood, strength and expressing the beauty to women's existence.
These were some illustrations I had done in relation to some of the poems I had read which best related to the topic.
R.H Sin - A beautiful composition of broken
pg. - 210 (child of the moon)
2. pg. - 72 (the woman)
3. pg. - 141 (she, you, woman.)
4. pg. - 88(mold.)
5. pg. - 45(because I understand)
I decided to write a book of poems, to sum up strong words for painful times people have experienced. I've written a poem for the 24 women who answered my question. Their stories showed so much passion and raw emotion and honestly that the best and purest way I wanted to respond with my art work (the beauty to the brokenness) was for me to use my words., It also gives the ladies something personal for them. The 25th woman I wrote poems for was myself. I had some poems I had written from years ago that I decided to include in the book, as well as new ones I wrote.
The poems all have a deeper meaning which can be fully and easily understood when reading them side by side to the answers in order of how they've been uploaded. The poems are responses to the answers, and I like how special this makes them. The attention to detail is something I think I achieved well as it draws on real stories, allowing them to flow and be received well due to softening the harsh blow of reality.
The book speaks on general themes of trauma, empowerment, womanhood, resilience, internal beauty and hardships. Within those, sub themes more personal to individual stories relate to anxiety, religion, self love, vulnerability, family and friends as well as romantic relationships.
In future I would like to expand the book and add more poems related to peoples hardships that have been shared with me as well as open up a bit more about my own past. I held a few things (ideas and feelings) back because of how sensitive they were to me, and not feeling comfortable yet to share my whole story.
