For my final major project I will continue to work with the subject matter of women as I have previously centered my work around them.
I now want to move from a holistic approach of women to a reductionist analysis of women; more specifically what makes them who they are. This will focus on how their internal beauty seems to grow despite the daily struggles set up to tear them down, personal traumas they’ve experienced and survived, and fighting through the hardships.
This concept will look at connecting all women from different walks of life with a common characteristic of strength that has allowed them to fight and endure trouble, oppression and heartbreak, making them who they are today.
In this project I would like to explore themes of personal struggles women may have experienced (e.g. sexual, physical, emotional, mental, financial) throughout history however predominantly centred around modern women. I will focus on the positive aspects of them overcoming a variety of issues, and the admirable characteristics displayed such as strength, resilience, patience and perseverance, showing how pain can be beautiful and beauty can come from pain.
Women come in all different shapes and sizes from different upbringings, cultures and religions. Therefore these things will influence how individuals think, feel and behave and I will factor these in. I will also play around with cultural and historical traditions that focus on the beauty of destruction by turning a bad situation into a good one.
My aim is to give encouragement to all women and highlight the magic in their existence by physically manifesting the charm in their thoughts and actions through textiles, ceramics and film, in an abstract yet delicate way.
I will predominantly be looking at the ways in which I can portray the beauty in brokenness/destruction. Also, how this has been successfully and unsuccessfully demonstrated in different cultures, religions and periods of history through art, psychological and societal norms as well as women's personal experiences.
