Desire is forced to maintain itself in this space between reality and pleasure. JanSvankmajer analyses his and other’s strange desires, the desires that conceals itself behind the motivation of the character are found when he analyses one's deepest and most strange desires.
Throughout this project I have been researching, interviewing and creating a surreal world full of obsessions with desire, being inspired from Jan Svankmajer and some of my own/friends/family’s experiences. However I was particularly inspired from Jan Svankmajer’s movie “Conspirators of Pleasure”.
The point of the film is not so much that the characters’ relationship to objects has provided them in some odd way with a sort of pleasure, but rather that the film itself fulfils this purpose for the audience.
Jan Svankmajer was also particularly intrigued by objects.
His work was a breakdown of the wall between literal movie making and stop animation. He embarked upon a long-running series of experiments set out to determine whether sense of touch couldn’t be liberated from mere utilitarianism and instead be found capable of
“Tactile wooden spoons, pot lids, rolling pins and boards are alchemistic tools and our bodies are the crucible for the magnum opus of totalism.”
With these objects he creates a bizarre language of visual symbols for the characters deepest desires in the film. The uncertain abyss where desires flow is a field broadly explored by Jan Svankmajer, within this project I would like to visually explore the exposure of one’s profound desires.
