ACQUA ALTA A VENEZIA - VENICE HIGHWATER
My project titled ‘Acqua Alta A Venezia : Venice Highwater’ Addresses the devastating impacts that climate crisis causes for the Venetian people and the iconic Venetian architecture. Whilst researching the paradoxical contrast of its beauty, mystery and my fascination with Venice.
Here I used water colour, gold leaf and black and white film taken in Venice.
Originally designed as a wooden chair for Ikea by Virgil Abloh, the Alaska chair is a paradoxical commentary on the effects of our everyday lives and mass-consumption habits on the global rising of sea levels and climate crisis. This work is in spired by the ‘Acqua Alta’ an Italian term used to describe regular floods in Venice caused by high tides and warm winds.
The chair is partly submerged by the rising flood waters, with a doorstep Wedge symbolically representing the short-term makeshift solutions we have for tackling climate crisis, yet by casting the work in bronze, a material intended to last, the work reflects on how environmental catastrophe is a tough, long-term problem that is not easily fixed by simple solutions.
The nest 2 pages are articles from the Italian newspaper in December when Venice was hit with the worst flood since 1966, with high tides water reaching 1.84 metres above sea level.
I printed these onto acetate and inserted these so they look creative over the 2 pages underneath.
