The original narrow 24-inch door is difficult to access between a wall and cabinetry.

The new design widens the door and creates a better walking path. From this perspective you can see two ways the design increases storage space; (1) cabinetry and open shelving are installed on the previously unused south wall, and (2) the lower cabinets will have "magic corner" cabinets installed, so the previously unreachable corners can be used with pull-out shelving.
